IRREADY PROGRAM REFERENCE DOCUMENT REV 1.3

Section 3 - Procedures for IrReady Test Labs

The Independent Assessors

3.0What is the role of IrDA-approved IrReady Test Labs?

The role of approved IrReady Test Labs is to provide independent and confidential testing of IrDA capable products to ensure IrDA interoperability. Independent testing is a proven technique to ensure interoperability in many areas and is especially important when there are many players and products in the industry such as the telecommunications, networking, computing and other industries.

3.1How to be an approved IrReady Test Lab

3.1.1Criteria for approval as an IrReady Test Lab

The goal of IrDA is to encourage the establishment of approved Test Labs globally, particularly close to the presence of IrDA member companies who manufacture IrDA capable products. To be an approved IrReady Test Lab, a company must:

Be competent in performing IrDA Interop Tests and procedures;

Be in the business of testing products, either as a formal Test Lab or have experience in formal product testing;

Be prepared to be audited, at the discretion of the Test Council;

Be willing to actively participate in the IrDA;

Be a paid up IrDA member.

3.1.2Responsibilities of IrReady Test Labs

The primary responsibility of IrReady Test Labs is:

To provide testing services to assure IrDA interoperability and compliance. This service must be available to all IrDA members on a non-discriminatory basis at a fair market rate (to be determined by the individual Test Lab);

Test Labs must at least be able to perform the Interop tests. It is recognized that not all Test Labs want (or are able to) perform full compliance tests necessary to verify reference products. Test Labs who are able to perform full compliance testing will need to be identified as such.

To present the “IrReady” certificate to products that pass the Interop tests as defined by IrDA; and

Report successful products to the IrDA office for registration.

In providing the IrDA Interop testing services, it is expected that the Test Lab ensure that:

The tests, procedures and processes conducted are the most up to date as defined by IrDA and that they are an advocate for the end-user in conducting the tests;

IrDA policies and procedures are complied with;

Tools and equipment are available for conducting the tests;

Other services may also be provided related to IrDA such as consulting and troubleshooting. This is the independent decision of the individual Test Lab.

One of the benefits of being an IrReady Test Lab is to be recognized as such on the IrDA web site.

3.1.3 Application and Selection of IrReady Test Labs

Test Labs will need to apply at the IrDA Office (address available from the IrDA web site or at the front of this document) and provide the necessary information as outlined in the application form.

The Test Council will review all Test Lab applications. The Test Council may request additional information about the proposed Test Lab, including information about the Test Lab’s equipment, testing expertise, etc. The Test Council then approves or denies the application. If the Test Council denies an application, it must provide written documentation on the reasons for denial. Reapplications are allowed.

3.1.4 Maintenance of IrReady Test Lab Status

The Test Council is responsible for maintaining the status of IrReady Test Labs. It will periodically request information from Test Labs to determine whether a Test Lab has sufficient equipment and expertise to perform proper IrReady testing.
