From Russia With Love

After the initial critical and financial success of Dr No in 1962, the United Artists studios asked the films producers, Albert R Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, to immediately commission the second film to be based on the James Bond character created by Ian Fleming. This turned out to be one of the best in the series, From Russia With Love (1963. dir Terence Young), a film that has a stronger story than the first film but was yet to be blighted by the overuse of gadgets that would plague later entries into the

James Bond series.

Made at the height of the 'cold war' between the West and Communism, the film is a wonderful example of the political climate of the time, mixing politics with action and adventure, yet having the intelligence to rise above the formulaic paranoia of many American anti-Russian thrillers by showing that life was more complicated than simply good versus bad. The basis of the plot revolves around the existence of a terrorist organization called S. P.E.C.T. R.E. that tries to play the British and the Russian intelligence services off against each other for financial gain. The plot itself is too complex to go into detail here but needless to say it involves deceit, traitors, exotic locations, glamorous girls and one of the great James Bond chase sequences involving a train, a helicopter and a fantastic battle between speedboats. In the story

we also get a feeling at what was considered the high technology of the time, an electronic signal decoding device (called a 'Lektor'), a tape recorder built into a camera, a car with a radio telephone and best of all, James Bond's suitcase complete with a gas canister, knife, gold coins and a high powered rifle that clips together in a matter of seconds. All this might seem quaint now but in 1963 it must have seemed to be the sort of equipment that glamourized the world of espionage for every schoolboy.

Of course, James Bond was considered the epitome of the glamorous world of espionage back in the early 1960s. He had become a cult hero from the pen of British writer (and former Secret Service man) Ian Fleming. The films actually paid very little attention to the books, as they were often drastically rewritten to make them more suitable as action films rather than spy stories. Sometimes only character names and the title of the story would remain from the novel once it had been turned into a film. Later films were also hideously Americanized in order to make the films more acceptable to American audiences, although at least the character of Bond has remained quintessentialy British. Fleming died in 1962 during production of the first Bond film, so he never really got to know just how big a

legacy his creation was to the world of film and literature, but it is known that although he originally favoured the casting of the British born Hollywood star Cary Grant for the role of Bond (even though Grant would have been nearly 60 years

old!), he was also very supportive of the producers eventual decision to cast a much younger and unknown actor (the 32 year old Sean Connery) in the role.

The support cast of the film is also of great interest too. An Italian actress called Daniela Bianchi played the glamorous Russian love interest, Tatiana Romanova. However, unlike Ursula Andress in Dr No, Daniela appears to have more or less disappeared into obscurity and I can find no trace of her on the internet. Film fans may also have noticed that the treacherous character of Major Donald Grant

is played by Robert Shaw, a British actor who would later appear in many Hollywood movies, the most famous of which is probably Jaws (1975, dir. Steven Spielberg). The character of Kerim Bey, Bond's contact in the Turkish Secret Service was played by the Mexican actor Pedro Armedariz. Sadly, both these actors died prematurely, Shaw of heart failure in 1978 and Armedariz , who was dying of cancer, committed suicide just days after his scenes for this film were completed (in 1963). By coincidence both men were 51 years old when they died.

DrNo had been made on quite a tight budget in England, but had proved to be a massive hit. For From Russia With Love the producers had been given a budget of $2.2 million (more than twice that of Dr No) yet even so they had to spend it wisely, with the vast majority of the filming taking place in the UK. Parts of Scotland were used for scenes set in the Turkish countryside, and it must be said that the final scene set on a Gondola in Venice was filmed in a studio and looks extremely fake.

However the film took a then massive $78.9 million on its worldwide release, and would cement Sean Connery's status as the definitive James Bond. Since Connery (a Scotsman) there have been 4 other actors to have played the iconic superspy, the Australian George Lazenby (in one film), Englishman Roger Moore (in seven films), Welshman Timothy Dalton (in two films) and, most recently, the Irishman Pierce Brosnan (in four films). All have brought different interpretations to the character and all the films have done well financially, but Connery really defined the role before special effects and gadgets started to overrun the stories and scripts in the later films.

The Bond films have always brought a certain criticism that they are detached from reality, and perhaps this criticism is justified. It is doubtful that the real world of espionage is anywhere near as exciting as the one 007 inhabits yet the flamboyant nature of this most British icon is not necessarily supposed to be a reflection of reality but to empower the term 'secret agent' with mystical qualities and appeal to the adventurer in us all. When the Bond films were at their most interesting, back in the 1960s, espionage was very real but perhaps also not quite as exciting as Bond would have us believe (for an alternative take on the spy thriller genre watch the Harry Palmer spy films, such as 1965s The Ipcress File, which provide a far more dour, grim and realistic feel to the subject).

Yet despite this criticism, the James Bond series have been incredibly successful over the years. The last film, Die Another Day (2002. dir. Lee Tamahori) did excellent box-office business and showed that, despite mediocre reviews, the series has crept comfortably into middle age. Bond was even reputed to have been a favorite of Russian Premier Yuri Andropov, and is perhaps the second best known fictional British crimefighter...after Sherlock Holmes!

Английский язык давно стал средством делового и межнационального общения между странами. Представьте себе коммерсанта, менеджера, банковского работника, ученого, инженера, моряка, летчика, стюардессу или современного офицера без этих знаний. Людям этих профессий, по нашему мнению, иностранный язык знать совершенно необходимо. И не только им, но и всем тем, кто стремится идти в ногу со временем.

Во все времена хорошее знание иностранного языка считалось признаком высокой культуры и образованности человека. Помимо того, оно всегда повышает самооценку личности и вызывает искреннее уважение со стороны окружения. И весьма неосмотрительно поступают некоторые молодые люди, считая, что иностранный язык им не понадобится. Жизнь нередко выносит самых разных людей на такие вершины и забрасывает в такие дали, которые в начале жизни им просто не видны. Этому можно привести массу примеров.

Мы не стремимся убеждать Вас становиться профессиональными филологами или переводчиками. Эти специальности по - своему хороши и интересны. Однако лучше, когда человек помимо знания иностранного языка имеет за плечами еще какую-нибудь специальность. В этом случае его ценность возрастает во много раз, в том числе и на рынке труда, что в наше время становится немаловажным фактором. Эти знания всегда пригодятся Вам в жизни.

Вы можете спросить: "Где же взять время, чтобы эти пожелания стали реальностью? Учащиеся и без того перегружены другими учебными дисциплинами?". Мы считаем, что безвыходных ситуаций не бывает. Все должно развиваться постепенно и равномерно. Главное - это умение правильно распределять время и постоянно придерживаться установленного для себя распорядка. Здесь надо проявлять настойчивость и определенную последовательность. Вперед можно двигаться и небольшими шагами. Придет время и Вы, обернувшись назад, увидете как далеко Вы продвинулись. Школа и ВУЗ дают хорошие знания. Надо только хорошо закрепить их и постараться не растерять на протяжении всей своей жизни.

Придет пора летних и зимних каникул. Это удобное время для занятий любимыми делами и хорошая возможность основательно позаниматься иностранным языком. Будете ли Вы отдыхать на море или на даче не забудьте взять с собой "Перископ"! В Вашем чемодане или сумке он не займет много места. То, что Вы не успели прочитать и усвоить в горячее время учебы, можно не спеша, на досуге, догнать без особых напряжений. Помните, что чем чаще Вы общаетесь с иностранным языком, тем легче и интересней он становится.
