Higher education in russia
The Russian system of higher education has a long-standing academic and educational tradition. Its objective is to serve educational needs of the state and of society. Everybody knows that an educated person can contribute more to the society. That is why the state pays great attention to the development of higher education and provides students with scholarships, grants and privileges. On the other hand, Russian people also show a great concern about good education for themselves and their children, because such education gives a person the prospect for professional advance.
All Russian institutes of higher education can be divided into two groups: the so-called classical universities and specialized higher schools. The universities train highly qualified specialists in sciences and arts. Specialized universities, academies, institutes and colleges train specialists for a specific field of national economy or culture: medicine, engineering, agriculture, education, arts and others.
The activity of a higher educational institution in Russia is run by Rector who … elected for the term of 5 years. Any institution is made up of a number of faculties headed by Deans. Each faculty has several chairs consisting of professors, associate professors, senior lecturers and assistants.
The Russian system of higher education has undergone several changes lately. Firstly, the number of higher schools has increased greatly: now there are over one thousand institutions training nearly six million students.
Secondly, there are both publicly and privately-owned institutes of higher education. Publicly-owned, or governmental, ones provide educational services free of charge while nongovernmental charge fees for tuition which are rather high.
Thirdly, now to enter a higher school an applicant should not only have a Certificate of Complete Secondary Education, but also should pass Unified State Exam. The score of the exams in three or four subjects is summed up and the total score is the basis for accepting an applicant at a university or an institute.
Next year one more change is to be introduced: a student will be able to choose _ programme of higher education with duration of four to six years. After a four-years course of study and passing State final exams a student will receive the Bachelor's degree. To be awarded the Master's degree one has to study two years more, carry out a research and pass final exams as well.
