UNIT 5. ADJECTIVES, ADVERBS
Прилагательные (beautiful) и наречия (beautifully) изучаются в этом уроке вместе, так как они похожи – называют признаки. Но прилагательные называют признаки предметов и характеризуют существительные (bad marks, a true friend, a smart dress, etc.); а наречия называют признаки действий или признаков и потому относятся к глаголам (to play the piano badly, to describe life truly, etc.), прилагательным (truly sorry, a smartly dressed girl, etc.) и наречиям (very often, truly well, etc.).
1. Decide whether the underlined word is an adjective or an adverb.
1. There are a lot of pretty girls here. 2. She is always prettily dressed. 3. You can speak English pretty well. 4. Do you speak English well enough? 5. Are you unwell? 6. Which of you plays the piano best? 7. Good marks are better than bad ones. 8. All is well that ends well. 9. You’d better not touch my cat, she’s awfully touchy. 10. My husband is touchingly considerate. 11. Lazy cats catch only very slow mice. 12. The pupil roze lazily. 13. Speak a bit slower, please. 14. Go slow! 15. She was walking slowly. 16. How noisy you are! 17. Not so noisily, please. 18. The students were chatting so noisily that I had to stop them. 19. Young men like to drive fast cars. 20. You answer fast but not best.
Качественные прилагательные (red, big, cheap, pretty, tasty, clever, etc.) могут иметь степени сравнения
|
Относительные прилагательные (wooden, left, middle, stony, etc.) не образуют степеней сравнения. |
Степеней сравнения не образуют качественные прилагательные, которые называют предельную степень признака. (dead, deaf, blind, mute, etc.), |
Относительные прилагательные, если они в контексте выражают оценку качества, образуют степени сравнения. I’ve never seen a more wooden face (т.е. более невыразительное, застывшее) |
2. Say whether the adjective has degrees of comparison.
1. poor 2. cruel 3. clever 4. ill 5. deaf 6. nice 7. modern 8. fast 9. lovable 10. friendly 11. serious 12. national 13. angry 14. handsome 15. stupid 16. dead 17. gentle 18. absolute 19. narrow 20. important

В английском языке степени сравнения прилагательных могут образовываться двумя способами: 1) при помощи суффиксов –er, -est big – bigger – the biggest 2) при помощи more, most difficult – more difficult – the most difficult |
К прилагательным, состоящим из одного слога, всегда добавляются -er, -est. hard – harder – the hardest |
Прилагательные, состоящие из трех слогов и более, всегда образуют степени сравнения при помощи more, most. convenient – more convenient – the most convenient |
По старым строгим правилам к двусложным прилагательным, оканчивающимся на –y, -ow, -er, -le, следует добавлять суффиксы -er, -est. easy – easier, narrow – narrower, clever – cleverer, gentle – gentler |
Это правило часто нарушается в современном английском языке: 1. В Америке ко всем двусложным прилагательным в речи может добавляться more, most. 2. ВБритании все еще предпочитают использовать -er, -est после прилагательных, оканчивающихся на -y. C другими двусложными фактически используются more, most. |
У многих двусложных прилагательных два способа образования степеней сравнения -er, -est и more, most: clever, handsome, narrow, shallow, simple, quiet, common, stupid, gentle, friendly, tiresome She is cleverer/more clever than he is. |
У некоторых прилагательных степени сравнения образованы от других корней (suppletive forms). good – better – the best bad – worse – the worst old – elder – eldest far – farther/ further – the farthest/ the furthest little – less – (the) least much/ many – more – most |
