Sample: Jesse Horst,Iris Recognition: A General Overview”

Introduction (topic & purpose):

“This article reviewed the literature regarding iris recognition… Possible applications for iris recognition are explored.”

Conclusion (summary: topic & major findings):

Conclusion (major claim, major findings, & implications):

“…soon there will be a wide spread revolution [in paper production] brought about by the poor economy, stiff foreign industry competition, and the rapid growth of technology… Paper mills need to look into using wet end additives to increase profits while shipping and producing the same amount of paper.”

Activity 1: Below is an Introduction from Mojisola Tiamiyu’s social science paper called “University-Community Agency Collaboration: Human Service Agency Workers' Views.” Can you reconstruct the sentences into their original order?

a. Furthermore, governments, foundations, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders continue to work on how to provide cost-effective community-based services to members of the society including the elderly.

b. In particular, the study sought to provide an avenue for them to communicate their understanding of university-community agency collaborations, and identify how their agencies could work collaboratively with the university.

c. According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, it is anticipated that if this trend in growth continues, by the year 2030 there will be approximately 70 million Americans aged 65 or over.

d. One approach has been an emphasis on community collaborations to address the planning and delivery of such services.

e. Little is, however, known about participants' views of university-community collaborations.

f. Several studies have examined issues related to the present and future provision and quality of community-based services for the elderly (Kelly, Knox & Gekoski, 1998; Buys & Rushworth, 1997; Damron-Rodriguez, Wallace, & Kington, 1994; Krout, 1994; Kuehne, 1992; Benjamin, 1988; Soldo & Agree, 1988; and Mahoney, 1978).

g. Human-service agency workers are major participants of university-based collaborations; hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate their views of community-based services to the elderly in northwest Ohio.

h. Funding agencies (e.g., U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development [HUD]) have encouraged university-community collaborations.

i. The growing size of America's population of seniors has drawn attention to their economic and social well-being.

j. America's population is growing older.

k. An example is HUD's Community Outreach Partnership Centers initiative, which involves university faculty, staff, students, and community residents and agencies/groups as partners in the development and implementation of research/community programs.

Workshop: Sharing Research Insights

Scan one another’s report body sections for main ideas. Look for answers to the following questions:

  • Which modes of participatory research did the authors use?

  • What did they find?

  • What conclusions do they draw from their primary and secondary research?

Take turns to share your findings. Give the authors of the body sections you read a gist of their arguments, as you understand them.
