Straightforward Intermediate Progress Test 2

Speaking Test Teacher’s Notes

Part 1

Ask four or five of the following questions.

  • Do you play the lottery? Why (not)?

  • Have you ever played the lottery?

  • Are you a lucky person? Why do you think you are lucky/unlucky?

  • Have you ever been very lucky? What happened?

  • Do you ever take risks? If yes, what? If no, why not?

  • When did you last take a risk? What did you do?

  • What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

  • Do you believe in coincidences? Why (not)?

  • What superstitions do you believe in?

Ask four or five of the following questions.

  • Are you ever impatient? When? Why?

  • When would you be impolite?

  • Have you ever been dishonest? What did you do?

  • What kind of things do you find inconvenient?

  • Have you ever been dissatisfied with something you bought? Why? What did you do?

  • What makes you unhappy?

  • What would you do if you were unemployed?

  • What’s the most unbelievable thing that has ever happened to you?

  • What would you do if you thought that an advertisement was inaccurate?

  • Have you ever been unsuccessful at anything? What was it? What did you do?

Part 2

You have one minute to think about your questions. Here are some phrases to help you. [Hand over sheet to student.]

STUDENT A

You want to go on holiday to (choose a place). You phone a travel agent to ask some questions. Use the following phrases:

  • Could you tell me …?

  • I wonder …

  • I’d like to know …

  • Do you know …?

Find out the following information.

  • when the plane leaves

  • the cost

  • the length of the flight

  • whether the flight is direct

The travel agent will also ask you some questions. Invent suitable answers.

STUDENT B

You are a travel agent. A customer phones you to ask some questions. You also need to ask them some questions. Use the following phrases:

  • Can you tell me …?

  • Do you know …?

  • Do you think you could tell me …?

Find out:

  • where they want to go

  • when (dates)

  • how long they want to go for

  • how many people are going

Invent suitable answers to the customer’s questions.
