RED NOSE DAY

DOING SOMETHING FUNNY FOR MONEY

What’s it all about?

“Red Nose day” is part of Comic Relief, a big charity event in the UK that has become a sort of holiday of laughter! In 1985, a famous British comedy writer Richard Curtis organized the first Comic Relief to raise money for the terrible famine in Ethiopia. Since then Comic Relief has taken place every two years two years in the spring. It supports many different causes to help poor people in the UK and around the world, like helping kids in Africa to get an education. RND is now so well established that many people consider it to be an unofficial national holiday. For example, many schools have non-uniform days.

What happens on Red Nose day?

On Red Nose Day, there are lots of special comedy shows on television and viewers can call to make donations. Many famous people have recorded songs or appeared in comedy sketches to help. In 2009, a group of celebrities, including the pop singer Cheryl Cole, even climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money! Everything aims to make people laugh and raise money for charity.

Money

The slogan for the last RND was ‘Do Something Funny for Money' and the money that was collected helped to fund projects in the following areas: treating malaria, education, maternal health and mental health. The BBC Red Nose Day telethon raised £74.3 million! Money-raising events take place all over the country and many schools participate. People also donate money by post, in banks, by phone using a credit card and online.

How do people get involved?

Anyone can do something funny to raise money for Comic Relief, like wearing a silly outfit to work and collecting donations for it! Also supermarkets sell red clown noses to wear on Red Nose Day to help raise money. Some people even put red clown noses on their cars!

T: Imagine you are a TV reporter covering this year’s Red Nose Day. Present it to the TV viewers, for example:

It’s Mike Smith live from London. Today we are celebrating Red Nose Day…

Hometask: Is there a similar charity event in your country? Collect information using the following plan: name, when it is, what happens. Compare it to Red Nose Day. Tell the class.

Урок 2.

T: Now let’s check your hometask. Present the class the charity event in Russia you have chosen. After that you classmates can ask questions. Are there similarities to Red Nose Day?

T: How do people in our town raise money for charity? Do local supermarkets organize special charity events? What charity events can we organize in our school? Where can the money go? How can we inform other people about the coming event? To do that we can make a poster. Look how British students make donation posters. What information can you find on it? Are there any differences with Russian posters?

Work in groups of 4. Imagine you are going to organize a charity event in our school. Choose the type of the event (a charity concert, selling self-made biscuits, donating things, like books, pens… or any other type). Choose where the money will go (to help orphans or homeless animals…). Prepare a poster or an announcement of this event to attract as many people as possible. Mention the following information:

  1. The name of the event

  2. Where and when the event will take place

  3. Suggested donation

Present your project to the class.
