The book is devoted to a new branch of surgery of the respiratory organs, namely to diagnosis and surgical management of injuries and diseases of the thoracic trachea and bronchi. The study is based on clinical experience of the All-Union Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery, USSR Ministry of Health, that compreses over 400 various, predominantly reconstructive, surgical interventions on the trachea and bronchi. The book presents normal and pathological anatomy, clinical course, modern methods of diangosis and therapeutic procedures in cases of open and closed injuries, different tumours, cicatrical and expiratory stenosis of the trachea and bronchi, as well as oesophago-tracheal and oesophagobronchial fistulas. Publication presents peculiarities and methods of anaesthesia and maintenance of pulmonary ventilation during surgical interventions on the trachea and bronchi. A description of typical operations on the trachea, its bifurcation and the bronchi is given. The main procedures consist of sleeveand window-resections, bifurcation resections, and several variants of resections and plastic repair of the bronchi. The authors include a description of surgical methods used in cases of expiratory stenosis of the trachea and bronchi, posttraumatic occlusion of the bronchi, oesophago-tracheal and oesophago-bronchial fistulas, as well as those used for broncho-pleural fistulas following pneumonectomy. Case histories of operated patients presenting indisputable interest for specialists are presented as well. The book is illustrated with X-ray pictures, including electroroentgenogrammes, original colour endophotogrammes, and pictures of operations by stage alongside with macroand micropreparations and schemes of operative procedures. The reference list includes all basic publications of Soviet and foreign authors, those of the recent 10-15 years being presented most explicitly. The book is intended for surgeons, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, bronchologists, as well as otolaryngologists, internists, pediatricians, oncologists, and traumatologists.
