PRESS CONFERENCE

Work in two groups:

Group A: media corps (a group of journalists)

Group B: a panel (a group of experts on International Relations).

You are going to take part in a press-conference devoted to the prospects of the Syrian conflict resolution and the international campaign against ISIS.

The main question is whether Bashar al-Assad and his Syrian rivals are able to become partners in the struggle against ISIS.

Each journalist is to prepare a list of questions to ask the experts at the press-conference. The questions should be based on facts and aimed at getting a substantive response

Please, avoid vague “What do you think about...” questions.

Each expert is to do some additional reading at home and prepare to defend their point of view.

Please, save the links you used for your additional reading into a hot-list and submit to your teacher when required.

One student chairs the conference: his / her task is to decide on the order of the questions in the discussion and the way to allow each expert present their opinion.

Each participant has to use topical vocabulary in their speech (3- 5 units).

Stephen Sackur: Why did Boko Haram so brazenly challenged the government (kidnapped 204 girls) and this challenge your government failed to meet?

Doin Okupe:

Stephen that is wrong the act itself is dastardly enough, I agree, but it’s not a reflection of seriousness of the challenge. I ‘ll explain to you. The girls were soft targets. There no Principal on site, the Vice Principal was not there, none of the teachers was there. There were just the girls, no light ( something unintelligible) no generators… They were just sitting targets..

Doin Okupe:

The terrorists took advantage of the situation as the girls had no security, but this is not the proof of the government’s incapability to protect them.
