For-to-инфинитивная конструкция/ for-to-infinitive construction

В этой конструкции инфинитив находится в предикативных отношениях с существительным или местоимением, которым предшествует предлог for. При переводе этой конструкции на русский язык ей соответствует придаточное предложение или инфинитив. For-to-инфинитивная конструкции может выполнять следующие синтаксические функции в предложении.

1. подлежащее it is good for smb to do smth it was easy for smb to do smth it will be impossible for smb to do smth	It’s easy for you to answer this question. Тебе легко ответить на этот вопрос. It will be interesting for me to prepare this report. Мне будет интересно подготовить этот доклад. It will be impossible for me to come to the lecture. Я не смогу посетить лекцию.
2. именная часть сказуемого	That was for him to find out. Выяснить это должен был он.
3. дополнение	The teacher waited for the student to speak. Учитель ждал, когда студент заговорит. He asked for the papers to be brought. Он попросил принести бумаги. I have arranged for you to speak at the meeting. Я договорился, чтобы ты выступил на собрании.
4. определение	There is nothing else for me to say. Мне больше нечего сказать. The best thing for you to do is to get ready for the exam. Самое лучшее, что ты можешь сделать – это подготовиться к экзамену. It’s not the right time for us to talk about it. Сейчас не время нам об этом говорить.
5. обстоятельство цели	They left thermometer on the table for the doctor to see it. Они оставили термометр на столе, чтобы доктор посмотрел его.
6. обстоятельство результата	He spoke loud enough for you to hear. Он говорил достаточно громко, чтобы вы могли его слышать.

Exercise 39. Replace the following groups of sentences by the sentence with for-to infinitive construction.

Model:

He won’t understand a lecture in English. It’s impossible. It’s impossible for him to understand a lecture in English.

1. She explained everything. It was not difficult. 2. Don’t make mistakes. It’s important. 3. You have to see a doctor. It will be good. 4. She has to do it on time. It’s very important. 5. She met him in the library. It was pleasant. 6. You should eat fruit. It is useful. 7. She had practice on the farm. It was necessary. 8. He passed his exam successfully. It was easy.

Exercise 40. Complete the following sentences by adding for-to- Infinitive Construction.

Model:

It’s better (you, stay in bed). It’s better for you to stay in bed.

1. It’ll be better (she, talk to the Dean). 2. It’s very important (animals, to have enough vitamins). 3. It was good (he, to attend this lecture). 5. It will be easy (you, translate this text). 6. Exercise 41. Replace the following pairs of sentences by the sentence with for-to- Infinitive Construction.

Model:

The problem was very difficult. We couldn’t solve it. The problem was too difficult for us to solve it.

1. The book was boring. I couldn’t read it. 2. The conversation was very interesting. Student didn’t want to leave the classroom. 3. She spoke fast. We didn’t understand her. 4. It was late. I didn’t want to go there. 5. It was cold. She didn’t go to the Academy. 6. It was dark. He couldn’t read.

Exercise 42. Translate from Russian into English paying attention to for-to- Infinitive Construction.

1. It is very important for animals to be immunized. 2. There is no need for you to assist the surgeon. 3. It is good for you to know the symptoms of this disease. 4. I’m waiting for veterinarian to come and examine my guinea pig. 5. It is better for the patient to stay in the hospital for two more days. 6. There was nothing else for me to say to the pet owner. 7. It was difficult for us to understand what caused the exacerbation of rheumatic endocarditis. 8. It was difficult for a veterinarian to find the source of infection. 9. It was very useful for us to use a new method. 10. There is nothing for me to do here.

Exercise 43. Translate from Russian into English.

1. Нам трудно сделать эту работу в такой короткий срок. 2. Ему небезопасно работать с этим веществом. 3. Ей было легко перевести этот текст. 4. Ему полезно есть витамины.5. Чтобы нам использовать этот метод, его надо улучшить. 6. Мне легче провести операцию самой. 7. Этому студенту необходимо сдать экзамен по анатомии. 8.
