There are many religious, political, and cultural holidays that are celebrated in America, and there are quite a few traditions that are participated in when these holidays roll around. From exchanging candy and tokens of love on Valentine's Day, to drinking a green beer and toasting the Irish on St. Patrick's Day, to watching fireworks and throwing a family barbecue on Independence Day, Americans make the most of each holiday.

Christmas is one of the most important holidays of the Christian faith, as it celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Over the centuries it has evolved from a mostly religious holiday to include elements of family, friends, celebration and gift giving. There are many traditions for this holiday, starting with getting a tree and decorating it with lights, ornaments and garlands. Families and friends exchange gifts, and children will write letters to Santa Claus where they promise they have been good enough all year long to get lots of presents. People will attend special holiday religious services, join up to sing carols door-to-door and gather for large meals.

St. Patrick's Day. Going to parties or bars is very popular on this holiday, as is drinking green beer and wearing clothing or accessories in this color. Children will pinch each other if they forget to wear at least one green item, while adults may overlook this St. Patrick's Day faux pas.

Easter. Easter is a Christian holiday that is often celebrated by participating in religious services. Families will get together to have a large meal, and it is also traditional to spend this day with relatives and friends. Children paint eggs in bright colors and patterns, which are then hidden by the Easter Bunny so that they can find them later on. Often this generous Easter Bunny also leaves baskets full of candy and toys for the children as well.
