Murder is a very serious crime. For this crime you might be sent to prison for several years.

Magistrates are respectable people and have “sound common sense”. They are selected from a wide variety of professions and social classes. Magistrates are usually given some training but they don’t have any formal legal qualifications. They don’t get any salary for their work.

The “Clerk of the Court” is trained in the law and is paid for his work. Sometimes he advises the Magistrates on legal points.

The most serious crimes are delt with by High Court Judges. High Court Judges are paid salaries for their work.

The jury listen to the evidence and decide if the defendant is guilty or innocent. If the defendant is found guilty the judge desides what should be done with the person. So the punishment is passed by the judge not the jury. The jury is seldom used in a civil case.

This man is arrested for robbing a bank. If he is found guilty he can be sent to prison for several years. When he is released from prison he can never be selected a Magistrate in future.

These people are arrested for shoplifting. Their case is heard in the Magistrates’ Court of course because the offence is petty. The defendants are judged by the Magistrates and can be sent to prison for several months.
