Why do we learn the English Language ?

1. —Is it necessary to learn foreign language ? Why ?

—Certainly, it is. Nowadays it is especially important to know foreign language. People need it for their work. Everyone who knows foreign language can speak to people from other countries, read foreign authors in the original, which makes your out look wider. The great German poet Goethe said, "Hе, who knows no foreign language, does not know his own."

2.—'Why do you learn exactly English ?

—Nowadays English has become the world's most important language in politics, science, trade and cultural relations. Half of the world's scientific literature is in English. To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated man, for every good specialist.

3.—Do you like English ?

—It goes without saying. English is a wonderful language. It is the language of the great literature. It is the language of William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens.

4.—Is English difficult for you, or is it easy ?

— English is difficult for me. In my opinion it's very difficult to study foreign language. I have to study hard.

5.—Do you know how to learn English better ?

—Yes, there are some rules of memory. It is necessary to repeat the material you have learnt every 3-5 days. If you don't repeat the material most of the information vanishes. It is better to memorize material before you go to bed. You'll memorize it more quickly.

What can you really do to improve your English?

Let me give you some advice:

1. Every day read a few pages of easy English texts and retell what you read aloud. You should be able to read and retell a page in 5 minutes. With this method, you'll repeat 200 words using different grammar patterns.

2. Listen to any spoken English on TV, radio, records or cassettes.

3. Write translations from English into Russian and vice versa.

4. Try to do simultaneous translations of slow Russian speech delivered on TV or radio.

5. Play any English games.

6. Create crossword puzzles.

7. Write down as many words from the letters of a given word as possible.

8. You can also create one word out of several words. For instance, "here" and "cat" make "teacher"

9. Work with a friend and test each other's abilities.
