4. How do you learn languages?

Discuss the following questions with your fellow-students:

What are the differences between the ways a baby learns its first language and the ways an adult learns a second language?

What advantages does the baby have?

What advantages does the adult have?

Do you think that opportunities to speak are more important than being corrected? Why do you say that?

What do you think the consequences of having other lessons at school taught in English would be?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having all your errors corrected?

5. Work alone.

What is the most important for you in learning a language? Put the list in order of importance.

  • learning grammar

  • learning vocabulary

  • speaking and being corrected

  • speaking and not being corrected all the time

  • listening

  • writing

  • pronunciation practice

Work in groups.

Compare your lists. Justify your order, but remember that different people learn in different ways. Try to agree as a class on an order of importance.

6. Can you think of some suggestions for effective language learning?

Different learners of foreign language have their own ways to learn it. Some of them are the following:

Sergey organises words by meaning, for example, words for feelings, words to describe places, words for movement, etc. In this way he can build families of words related in meaning.

Natasha uses various types of diagrams (words can be grouped under a heading or a more general word).

      1. Furniture

Living room bedroom kitchen

Sofa bookcase ……… stool dresser

Lamp wardrobe …………

Olya sticks little bits of paper all over her house. For example she has “wall” on the wall, on the desk she has “desk”, etc.

Nadya has two copy-books. In one copy-book she writes down all the new words. When she is having a break or is travelling in the bus, she takes out her copy-book, and if she remembers the words she rewrites them into another copybook.

7. You have a friend who has never studied English. Which ten words or expressions would you advise your friend to learn before visiting an English-speaking country for a holiday? Make a list. Compare your list with another student’s. Give reasons for your choice.

8. Choose one of the problems below (it doesn’t matter if it is a problem you don’t really have) and ask your partner for advice:

Speaking

1. “I pause too long before I speak”

2. “By the time I think of what to say, the conversation topic has changed”

3. “I don’t have any opportunities to speak outside the classroom”

4. “I can talk about most topics, but I don’t know what to say in social situations like welcoming people or dealing with complaints”

5. “Some of the topics we talk about in class are things I never talk about even in Korean, so I don’t have any ideas about what to say”

6. “I get stuck when I am speaking because I can’t remember a word or don’t know how to say things in English”
