Introduction

In our society, law plays an important part in the creation and maintenance of social order. We must be aware, however, that law as we know it is not the only means of creating order. Even in our society, order is not solely dependent on law, but also involves questions of a more general moral and political character. This book is not concerned with providing a general explanation of the form of order. It is concerned more particularly with describing and explaining the key institutional aspects of that particular form of order that is legal order.

International law typically governs the rights and responsibilities of States; criminal law, conversely, is paradigmatically concerned with prohibitions addressed to individuals, violations of which are subject to penal sanction by a State. The development of a body of international criminal law which imposes responsibilities directly on individuals and punishes violations through international mechanisms is relatively recent.

In my work we are discussing how law terminology and lexicon could be understood and translated. Also we will analyse some interesting works of thematic literature, teaching materials and manuals, as well as practicing tests and texts used as teaching materials in the legal universities of the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The object of study is law terminology in some European languages.

The subject of the research is terminology and lexis, the types and ways of understanding them in the English language (American and British specific).

The purpose of studying is to examine how specific professional law slang could be found in books, in the language and to sort out if it is good for the language or not.

The objectives of this research are the following:

  • to study literature references concerning law terminology and lexis;

  • to define specific law slang as a unique phenomenon of the English language;

  • to illustrate some of the features of words in a law debate, litigation and pleadings;

  • to illustrate some situations and using law terminology and lexis.

Methods used in the research are comparative, theoretical, analysis.

Actuality of the work is as follows: modern society is getting more interested in law features, being educated in this part of life is getting more important than ever before.

Theoretical basis: Theoretical analysis of the literature showed that this issue was covered in the works of Caterine Mayson, Robert Cryer, Elisabeth Wilmshurst, Gary Slapper and David Kelly.

Practical value: The work material has a certain practical value and may be used in studying the speech in school clubs and at the lessons. Relevance of the research lies in the fact that the problem of the interaction of language and society cannot be solved without studying the functioning of vocabulary in different social background and occupation groups, without through analysis, it is necessary to study at universities, as vocabulary knowledge is required for successful understanding of contemporary periodicals and literature. This is also required in a special course of law translation, which may be introduced at the translation department of the university.

The structure of the research includes introduction, three chapters, conclusion, appendix and references.
