The following particularly have to be mentioned.

• NEVEROWSKiS 27th DIVISION

As far as Boutourlin was concerned, this division had to be included in the total for Borosdin's Corps.

This was not an Army Corps, but a division which had been heavily committed in order to delay the advance of the French towards Smolensk. It had resisted well against the rather disorganised charges that Murat threw against it but which nevertheless caused severe losses. Because of these losses, the division included 4 regiments with two battalions each:

The Vilna, Simbirsk, Odessa and Tarnopol infantry and the 49th and 50th Jiiger regiments. It had lost its artillery.

THE ILOVAISKI COSSACKS

These cannot be counted in Platov's 7 000 cavalrymen with their 30 squadrons. Counting 100 Cossacks per squadron, which is few, this repre-

sents 3 000 Cossacks forgotten by Boutourlin. These Cossacks were assimilated to a force of 30 squadrons.

Cossack regiments of Ilowai'ski (4), of Bug, Oussarev, Syssoiev, Karpov and Andreinov.

Artillery

A company of Don Light Artillery

MILORADOVITCH'S REINFORCEMENTS

These are to be named apart. He only brought back about a thousand Cavalrymen and the Moscow Militia. There were already 3 000 - 5 000 militiamen brought back from Smolensk, the Mocow contingent formed 11 regiments numbering 27 772 men. For the Russians, there were only 20 000 organised into regular troops, the remainder being used for work and for evacuatiing the wounded from the battlefield. They can be thus estimated at 20 000 utilisable fighters. A lot of militiamen served to make up regiments which had been hard hit.

A letter sent on 5th September from Mojaisk, to Rostopchin by Markov, the commander of the Moscow Militia says that eight of his regiments had joined the first army and six the second. He was left with 3 000 men to look after the safety of the villages, of which several had been pillaged and burnt by the camp followers in the baggage train and by Cossacks. He kept a reserve of 4 000 men on the left wing.

RUSSIAN NUMBERS AT BORODINO

BARCLAY DE TOLLY'S ARMY

In his book published in 1824 and dedicated to the Tsar, Boutourlin gave a total of 150 battalions, 134 squadrons of the Line, 72 irregular squadrons and 43 artillery companies (including 2 companies of Pioneers). A battalion corresponded to 650 combattants theoretically, a squadron to 170 cavalrymen, and an artillery company to 230 men; we are a long way from reality.

BAGRATION'S ARMY

There were 58 battalions, 52 squadrons and 17 artillery companies. Taking the theoretical figures, a figure of 50 000 men could be reached, but in their report of 27 August, the Russians gave the number of 34 125 soldiers with 73 cannon. Boutoulin gave however 54 200 men for this figure.

THE TOTAL

Boutourlin gave a total figure of 131 200 men present at Borodino for the whole Russian Army; but he forgot Pahlen's cavalry, a certain number of Cossacks and 5 000 militiamen, a total of about 10 000 men. So a grand total of 140 000 men.

THE PROBLEM OF THE MILITIAMEN

The Russian figures estimate more than 30 000 men in the field, but they were used to complete some regiments and were also used for work by the campaigning army. They were only 15 000 combattants regrouped and regimented, who were not actually used, being left in the second line as a reserve on the extreme left.

SOME GENERALITIES ABOUT THE 1812 RUSSIAN ARMY

Like all armies, it had gone through a lot of changes, especially in the spread of the regiments; the basic structure however was fixed. The Prussian influence could be felt at every level of the organization.
