Biology

Drell are omnivorous reptile-like humanoids with an average lifespan of 85 galactic standard years. Also they are viviparous and their children are able to eat solids from the moment of birth. Drell appearance is very similar to asari and humans, but their muscle tissue is slightly denser, giving them a wiry strength. As all other reptiles, drell have three-chambered heart with a muscular septum. Although many of their more reptilian features are concealed, their hyoid bone, located in their throats, is particularly developed. This allows them to inflate their throats and produce vocal sounds outside of the human range. That is a reason why drell can’t be suffocated. They also have two sets of eyelids, akin to crocodiles. In addition, drell possess the ability to shed tears. Initially drell used to be nomads. That is the reason why they possess eidetic memory, an adaptation to a world where they must remember the location of every necessary resource (vegetation, drinkable water and prey migration paths) across vast distances. The memories are so strong that an external stimulus can trigger a powerful memory recall. This ability has been called a solipsism by other intelligent races afterwards.  Later, when drell have learnt to mill the stones and cultivate the land, they have split into “nomad” and “settled” ones, who have established settlements near the large sources of water (lakes, rivers, etc.)  From the very beginning drell used to share the same scheme of colors (coat pattern), acquired by their species during the evolution process.  Later, when the natural surroundings of some drell communities have changed (after the “settled” and “nomad” division), their coat patterns have been changed as a result of the environments influence. 

Nomad drell

The major daily rounds for nomad drell were hunting and foraying. Due to the constant clashes with each other and plunder raids on settled groups they have become well-skilled and battle-hardened warriors. Every tribe has been leaded by the experienced military leader (chief). In all other aspects the tribe members were equal.  The children have been brought up with the respect to age criterion and taking into account traditional relationships between each other. Children have been educated depending on their age criterion. The relationships between each other were based on the ancient traditions. Honoring elders was of the high priority ones.  Every drell, regardless of ones gender attribute, had been obligated to undergo the ceremony of initialization. Early marriages were strictly prohibited, until male and female have proven themselves in hunting and battles. All the other tribe duties, such as crafting, household activities, bringing up children, have been done by the oldsters, cripples and women, who have abandoned the path of warriors. Unlike drell men their women could refuse being a warrior after the initialization ceremony.  The penalty for desertion had been very severe. The crime level among the “nomads” had been extremely low, unlike among the “settled” ones with their well-organized penalties system. The punishment for a solecism was hard and fast. Regardless of being a deserter, murderer or just a thief, a guilty drell, had been exiled to a desert, sentenced to the long and painful death. If there were some mitigating circumstances, the sentenced one had been executed painlessly. The corpse had been fed to animals. Pher – a sun in the shape of desert dragon, with his horns turned front wise, was meant to be a paramount god. It’s interesting, that such a giant species were not present on Rakhana during the process of civilization development. However, the creatures we accustomed to call “dragons“ ruled over the planet in ancient times, when drell predecessor have been faintly similar to their modern offsprings. These mighty creatures had strongly reflected in drell genetic memory, and as a result have taken a major part in religion and art. The nomads, who spent most part of their lives fighting, have had a strong belief that they are Pher’s children.
