Resume ['rezju(:)mei]

In the USA people write a short biography called Resume. The word resume is a French word, now used in English, that means summary. In the American job market, you must represent yourself on paper. The resume is your calling card. Its purpose is to attract the interest of the prospective employer. It can be your ticket into the interview. That is why people often have more than one resume. They choose the most appropriate one for each job that they apply for.

There is no correct resume format. Your resume format should be appropriate to your situation. Your resume format must be consistent. The common kinds of resume formats are:

Chronological Resume Format

Here the resume is organized on the basis of time. The better name for this resume format would be a reverse chronological resume' format as you list the most recent work experience first. A chronological resume format is by far the most popular kind of resume format.

Functional Resume Format

Here the resume is organized on the basis of the job function, and presents a good perspective on what you can do (rather than when you did it). This method is useful where the job-seeker has made many changes, is in transition from one field to another, or has never worked before. Combination Resume Format Purely functional resume formats are not popular anymore. Many people prefer to use a combination of functional and chronological resume formats instead.

Targeted Resume Format цільовий

If you have had a fairly single-tracked career so far and intend to remain on the same track, you can consider a targeted resume format. This means you could use language and keywords that are local to the industry or sphere of your activity. Additionally, you can present a strong candidature for the targeted opening. Note that a targeted resume could be in the chronological resume format or in the functional resume format (or a combination).

The following is an outline for an effective resume:

Heading

Name, address, and telephone number in the upper left/ right hand corner or upper middle of the page. Include zip code and telephone area code.

Professional Objective and Summary

This can be very important. This is your goal around which all other items in the resume revolve. Include only your immediate goal. Be specific with a job title or a clear description of your area of interest. Sometimes a brief summary of your qualifications is helpful.

Professional Experience

List by chronology or function, according to what is most appropriate for your background. Give a description of what you did, materials or products used or worked on, your accomplishments, a sample of something significant that you did. Use action verbs like planned, organized, developed, and managed.

Education

Use the comparable American degrees wherever possible.

Personal Data

Give your immigration and residence status and state that your employment is authorized (for those who apply for a job in the USA). List the languages you are fluent in, making sure to indicate your native language and English!

Be prepared to rewrite your resume on the basis of information you gain from your first few interviews or contacts. Pay attention to the questions you are asked and any comments about your experience. Use this information to improve your resume. Remember, your resume is you.

REMEMBER!

In the U.S., some scientific, healthcare, and academic jobs and internships require that you submit a Curriculum Vitae instead of a resume. You might also be required to submit a CV as a part of your application to graduate or professional school. A Curriculum Vitae is similar to a resume, in that it's a summary of qualifications. But it typically includes more information than a resume and is more like a career biography.

Here are some important differences between a CV and a resume:

Look in the newspaper and select a job that you are qualified for and/or would like to have, and write a CV for it.
