Student Culture: The Most Important Aspects of Student Life
Student life is fun, creative and unforgettable. At the same time it may be rather challenging and stressful sometimes. What should one do to cope with problems and make his/her student years the most exciting ones in all his/her life?
The answer is rather obvious: one should be active and participate in college or university social life.
Remember that your studies are important, but they should not take all your time. Experience all the benefits of your young years and enjoy them. So, what possibilities open for you during your college or university years?
1. The first thing that one should pay attention to is on-campus living. Actually, campuses are centers of university or college life. Living on-campus you always have a possibility to meet a lot of new people. It is rather comfortable as you have everything at hand like classes, labs, and library. Campuses are the venues of all events and parties, so, you will be in the center of student’s recreational activities.
2. Extracurricular activities. It goes without saying that extracurricular activities are beneficial for students. As every student participates in them, it is another possibility to meet friends. Moreover, you can do things that you really like and develop your skills and abilities. It is a possibility to realize your potential and discover talents. Moreover, participation in activities is a valuable contribution to your future life and profession
3. Student union. If you are active, creative and you want to improve lives of students of your college or university, than join a student union. It is a body of student government that promotes and protects students’ rights. So, if you feel like that, then welcome to student union.

Lars: Can Americans do 1 to prepare themselves for their future careers? Many people do that kind of job training in my country
Tina: That's not very common in the United States. Americans usually learn on the job; however, some junior colleges offer shorter, more practical career training programs.
Lars: What are junior colleges?
Tina: Colleges and universities in the United States are extremely expensive. Even schools which are funded by the government can cost thousands of dollars a year. Most states have created junior colleges, which are inexpensive schools where students can complete the first two years of their education. Afterwards, students can transfer to a four-year college or university to complete their bachelor's 2. And, as I mentioned, they also provide career training and continuing education courses.
Lars: What does 3 mean? Is that the same thing as a bachelor's?
Tina: That means Bachelor of Science. You also often hear the abbreviation 4, which is short for Bachelor of Arts. For example, I 5 in chemistry, so I have a Bachelor of Science; but, my brother studied philosophy, so he has a Bachelor of Arts.
Lars: I thought you studied German literature.
Tina: That was my 6 - my secondary field of study.
Lars: What about after you finish your bachelor's?
Tina: Students can continue studying and receive a 7, which usually requires an additional two years of study. And of course, the highest degree is called a 8, which is another word for doctorate.
