II. Use of rhythmic structures.

a) State what rhythmic structure is prompted by the lexical composition of the following phrases.

b) Read the following utterances according to the suggested rhythmic structure.

They are sure to have a lot of fun together. (3 stress-rhythm)

I think it’s one of the best Italian summer resorts. (3 stress-rhythm)

III. Use of pitch contours*.

a) React expressing a normal farewell.

  • I’m afraid I must be off. See you tomorrow.

  • Good-bye.

b) Show a friendly attitude in the reply to the following question.

  • Are you sure you won’t break it?

  • I’ll try to be careful.

Iy. Auditory memory check.

Act out the following situational context by analogy with the text “Aunt Emily”..

Of all my relatives I like my uncle William the best. He is my father’s younger brother. He is in his early fifties, but he is much younger in appearance. He has a lean oval face, straight dark hair, which he wears very short, and expressive grey eyes. He is very good natured and whenever you ask him, he’ll always do his best to help you.

*A pitch contour is an overall tone pattern of an intonation group. It is formed by the type of Prehead, Head and nuclear tone.

e.g. That’s the 'best ·news I’ve heard for a \long time.

The pitch contour of this statement is defined as a high falling contour with a normal prehead and a stepping head.

I. Identification and reproduction of intonation patterns.

Read the following conversational context according to the intonation marks:

Pat Hal\lo, /Helen! Hal\lo, /Jim! Let’s have lunch in the \garden. It’s nice and \warm out /here. Come and have something to /drink.

  1. Use a friendly general question as a reaction to the following statement.

- We’re going on an excursion tomorrow.

  • May I join you?

b) Use the appropriate apology in the stimulus-utterance.

  • I’m afraid I’ve broken your favourite cup. I’m really sorry.

  • Never mind. Don’t feel guilty.

Act out the following situational context by analogy with the text “At the Seaside”. (London Course).

When we were teenagers we used to have a lot of fun playing the guitar and singing and dancing in the park. I suppose you liked it too when you were in your teens because it’s really one of the most typical pastimes for youngsters. We all enjoyed sitting on the bench or hanging around and playing jokes on one another. Sometimes we gave our classes a miss and the teacher would get very angry and tell us we oughtn’t to treat our studies so carelessly.
