Seaside drell

Constant storms raise many difficulties for drell, that’s why they didn’t create settlements near the ocean. Being afraid of Kalahira’s indignation and without any ability to protect themselves from the waves’ destructive power, their major part used to dwell in deserts or near less dangerous water reservoirs. Nevertheless, a very small isolated group of the reptile-like species got used to the life near the seaside. They made settlements on the rocky coasts, rising high over the water stage, and made their buildings from stones, in order resist weather impact. When a gale came, all to the last man stood on their knees and prayed to the Great Kalahira, to soothe down her anger.

Due to differences of the environmental influence, representatives of this tribe differed from the remained part of species greatly: their scales were dark-gray colored; the bone plates on their heads were standing out sharply against other drell; they were narrow-eyed. Their tall and gnarled at the first glance bodies, had bulging muscles and strong-build bones. As a matter of fact, they were extremely good at swimming and hunting, that is why they earned their livelihood by fishing and hunting sea-creatures that could be useful in everyday life and for food. Seaside drell laid stress on developing self speed, which played a major role in their fights with big predators or wars with aggressive tribes.

Seasiders had the ability to produce vocal sounds outside of the usual range, as well, as all other drell. They have developed this skill and used a special sound tactics to scare away large animals and paralyze the central nervous system of smaller species. This was widely used during the fishing process. This has also been in use during battles with conflicting groups – causing motiveless panic and fear attacks among their enemy’s military ranks. This was the reason why they have been imputed supernatural abilities and divine origins afterwards.

Desert tribes used to believe, that drell living at the seaside are descendants of sea dragons, which, according to ancient legends, were serving Kalahira, and escorting souls to the judgment of goddess. These souls could get to Heaven after a judgment or be sent to the infinite wandering across the ocean in a form of mystical lights. Sea dragons were pictured as gigantic reptiles with snake-like bodies, three pairs of short sharp-clawed legs and long webbed dorsal fins. According to ancient legends, a few thousand years ago several goddess servants have left the underwater in a mortal form and settled across the usual drell, in order to found a sacred clan of Kalahira’s deputies in the dar al-fana.

Drell were acquainted with the images and descriptions of sea dragons only within ancient hierogram’s means. Nevertheless, even centuries later, they were keeping old traditions zealously and invited seaside drell to their settlements and towns in order to conduct funeral rites. Initially this way of collaboration was contractual, and seasiders were sending one priest with his lay brothers (they helped with funerals and acted as guardians in case of such necessity). But permanent journeys for long distances were very exhausting and disadvantageous. Citizens had to wait for Kalahira’s priest’s arrival for a quite long time. This caused decomposition of dead bodies and as a result – spreading of decay odour and diseases. That is why in the very beginning of industrialization process seaside drell almost completely moved to big towns, where they started to lead Kalahira’s ministers and funerals on continuing basis. All processes used to be hold in Kalahira’s temples.

Even after resettlement deeper into the continent lands, they have kept their ascetic lifestyle and tried to hold together, aside from other kinds of drell. The rest of drell society treated seasiders with respect, giving sea dragon’s inheritors their due, without tries to dictate own customs. All marriages between seasiders were arranged by the heads of their families. Despite the time flow and slight tradition changes that has appeared after environmental alteration, they were striving for safety of the initial population. Purity of the “divine blood”, a religious duty and family were taking a crucial part in the life of every seaside drell.

After the evacuation process from the destructed Rakhana, seaside drell were resettled to the specially built dome on Kahje planet. This building was artificially simulating the atmosphere, similar to their natural environment. That is why they were able to keep their usual way of living, with some exceptions in extraordinary cases. As example, in case of possibility to serve hanar, whom seasiders were treating as respectively, as all other drell.
