Animals Included in the Phylum Porifcra

All sponges are grouped together in the porifera (which means "pore bearers"). The tissue organization of the sponges gives definite indication that they arose from a protozoan group. Adult sponges are sedentary (stationary) and for this reason were at one time thought to be plants. Sponges are found in both salt and fresh water. The majority of sponges, however, are marine (that is, they occur in salt water) and are found at all depths of the water.

Individual sponges are very simple in structure but because of the process of budding they build up complex colonies. A simple sponge has a sac-like body which consists of two layers of cells: an outer, protective layer, and an inner, nutritive layer. Between these two layers are found wandering amoeboid cells, reproductive cells, and skeleton-forming cells. The body wall is perforated by numerous pores through which water, carrying food and oxygen, enters the central cavity. At the free end of the sponge there is a large opening through which water, laden with waste products, passes to the exterior.

Their Importance

Most sponges are supported by a skeleton which may be made up of limy material, of sandy material, or of a silk-like substance called spongin. When individual sponges die, their skeletons may be added to the remains of coral animals and thus assist in the building of coral reefs and islands. The sponge skeletons, which are made of a sandy-like material, play an important part in the formation of flint. The common "bath sponge" is the spongin skeleton of certain members of the sponge phylum.
