1. Ways of Translating the Passive Voice

Way of translation	English sentence	Russian translation
The Passive construction is translated by the analogous Russian construction.	The way to misfortune is paved with good intentions. to pave the way - прокладывать путь, подготавливать почву	Путь к неудаче вымощен благими намерениями.
The Passive construction is translated by the Active one.	Human populations are already being severely affected by damage to the environment due to depletion and degradation of resources.	Ущерб, нанесенный окружающей среде вследствие истощения природных ресурсов и ухудшения их качества, уже весьма серьезно сказывается на жизни людей.
The Passive construction is translated by the indefinite-personal sentence (неопрделенно-личное предложение).	Recently, the phrase "talent management" is being used to refer the activities to attract, develop and retain employees.	Сегодня фразу «управление талантами» используют для того, чтобы описать вид деятельности, направленный на привлечение, развитие и удержание работников на предприятии.

2. Ways of Translating Modal Verbs

The ability of the translator to identify the function of the modal verb, used in the sentence will help him better understand the author’s intention and render this sentence into Russian as close as possible to the original.

Should / ought to	Obligation	Theoretically, a senior HR representative should be present when an organization’s corporate objectives are devised. HR - персонал, штат служащих	Теоретически представитель высшего звена управления должен участвовать в процессе разработки целей деятельности фирмы.

To be to + Infinitive	An order which is generally the result of an arrangement made by one person for another, an arrangement which is not to be discussed.	The expedition is to start in two days.	Экспедиция отправляется (должна отправиться) через два дня.

To have to + Infinitive	Obligation or necessity arising out of circumstances. (It is often rendered in Russian приходиться, должен, вынужден)	Newspapers have had to cope with competition from radio and television.	Газетам приходится вести острую конкуренцию с радио и телевидением.
Shall	Compulsion or strict order	“Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom … of the press.”	"Конгресс не должен издавать ни одного закона, … ограничивающего свободу … печати".
	Suggestion	Shall we do this exercise now?	Делать это упражнение сейчас?
	Offer	Shall I help you with your homework?	Тебе помочь сделать домашнее задание?
Will	Volition (волевой акт, хотение), intention (In most cases this meaning is rendered in Russian by emphatic intonation, but sometimes the verb хотеть is used.)	I will read this report.	Я обязательно прочитаю этот доклад.
	Persistence referring to the present or to the future	.. as doctors get more experience, their competence base will increase, as will their endowment of human capital. endowment - дарование, талант, способности	… по мере того, как врачи приобретают больше опыта, бесспорно, растет и их компетентность; прямо пропорционально растут и их вложения в человеческий капитал.
Would	Volition (волевой акт, хотение)	He would do it.	Он непременно хотел это сделать.
	Persistence (настойчивость, упорство, непоколебимость)	The lad would have far more impact on the world than the failed president his name honoured.	Парнишка этот повлиял на мир куда больше, чем неудачник-президент, в честь которого он был назван.
Need	Necessity	This assembly line needs repairing.	Этот сборочный конвейер нужно отремонтировать. / Этот сборочный конвейер требует ремонта.
