C ity University of London traces its origin to the Northampton Institute established in 1894.

The Department of Journalism was established in this university in 1976. Nearly 4000 ex students work in different spheres of the media nowadays. The City University of London is considered the best university in the United Kingdom in this field of study and the Department of Journalism is regarded as the “Oxbridge of Journalism”. The Departments provides education in print, broadcast and web journalism and awards academic degrees of BA, MA and PhD.

The Independent newspaper praised its legendary status within the media “primarily due to its practical approach to journalism and its unparalleled access to media facilities”.

Text 4 school of journalism and mass communication, university of north caroline

T he University of North Caroline (UNC) School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s responsibility is to train the next generation of media professionals, including journalists, strategic communicators, teachers and researchers. The program is dedicated to providing journalists and mass communication professionals with the most up-to-date knowledge needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive market. The school provides courses in print, broadcast and on-line journalism, visual communications including photography, multimedia and web-design, advertising, PR and marketing.

The school offers BA, MA and PhD degrees in journalism and mass communication, and administers a variety of professional development and distance learning programs. Enrollment includes 800 undergraduates and 100 graduate students.

The school is located in Carroll Hall on the historic Polk Place quad of the nation’s first public university – just a short walk from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s iconic Old Well.

In 2009, the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications said the school “has earned a reputation as one of the premier programs in journalism and mass communication”.

Text 5 phillip merrill college of journalism, university of maryland

The Merrill College educates students at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral levels within a liberal arts context, preparing them for careers in journalism as well as careers in academic research and teaching. The mission of the College is to improve the production, delivery and access to news, and to enhance the understanding of journalism’s political, cultural and social roles in the USA and around the Globe. The teaching stuff is a prestigious mix of journalists and scholars and includes six Pulitzer Prize winners. The college provides hands-on, professionally oriented curriculum designed with an eye on the future.

The college is named after Phillip Merrill who combined publishing and public service for a long time. In 2001 he and his wife donated $10 million to the University of Maryland for the journalism school and the school was renamed in his honor.

Students majoring in journalism undergraduate program take approximately one-third (41 credits) of their total course work in the professional field of studies. Courses are designed to provide students with a working knowledge of the tools and concepts they will need to perform a top-flight professional communicators across multiple media platforms including web, television, radio, newspapers, magazines and other news products.

The remaining two-thirds (81 credits – 65 of those are categorized as liberal arts credits) consists of variety of other subjects such as history, economics, government, sociology and psychology. Within these credits journalism students must choose a “minor” (a core of advanced work in a substantive field) to establish competency in a specialized area of knowledge they will be able to use as professionals.
