Text 1 the nctj diploma in journalism
The NCTJ Diploma in Journalism equips trainee journalists with the knowledge and skills for professional entry level journalism. This new qualification was launched in 2010 to encompass the modern multimedia convergent journalist and is replacing the Certificate in Journalism.
The qualification has three under-pinning values:
To focus on the vital skills of finding and telling stories accurately and to deadline
To reflect that most journalists work in a multimedia environment and that ‘new’ and ‘traditional’ skills should be fully integrated and embedded in training and assessments
To ensure the core essential skills are covered and assessed to a national standard but with flexibility to specialize.
To gain the diploma, all candidates MUST complete the five mandatory subjects – the core skills for all journalists – plus at least two of the specialist options.
This preliminary qualification can be gained by attending an NCTJ-accredited course, by training on-the-job and by distance learning. Some approved exam centers offer their students the opportunity to sit NCTJ exams, but this training is not accredited by the NCTJ. Anyone can sit the Diploma in Journalism exams on the national dates held twice a year in April and November. Note that NCTJ-accredited courses must deliver the mandatory subjects and at least two options. Centers can choose which options they offer students and this will vary depending on the course and the type of centre. If a centre doesn’t offer an option it can be studied by distance learning.
Text 2 linnaeus university (sweden) media and communication studies
Within the field of media and communication science the students will devote their attention to everything from communication in organisations to the analysis of TV schedules. This applies regardless of whether they study on a degree programme or on freestanding courses. Within the subject area, they can study widely diversified aspects such as the content of different media, production conditions and use, communication within organizations, inter-cultural communication and strategic communication.
Courses and programs include practical elements in varying degrees from being wholly theory-based and analytical to having a clear practical skills focus such as in practical media production and oral and written presentation technologies. This combination ensures that as a student young people will gain a basic academic understanding of the subject while at the same time they will be practically prepared to work in the media sector.
