ТЕСТ I.

Прочитайте текст. Укажите на бланке ответов номера предложений, которые соответствуют содержанию текста.

Oxygen is one of the most common elements in the earth's crust. It makes up about one-half of the mass of the globe. In nature it is found in combination with great many other elements. It is found in water. One atom of oxygen combines with two atoms of hydrogen forming a water molecule. Air contains oxygen, about one - fifth of air is pure oxygen. This gas is essential for respiration and combustion. All these facts are well known today but they were unknown until the last quarter of the 18th century. People owe the discovery of oxygen to Joseph Priestly, Karl Wilhelm Scheele and Antoine Gaurent Lavoisier. Joseph Priestly (1733-1804) produced oxygen when he was heating oxide of mercury with a strong burning lens. He supported the phlogiston theory and thought that phlogiston had been driven out of the air that he had collected. He gave the name of "dephlogisticated air" to oxygen. Priestly continued his experiments. He heated various substances with his burning lens and produced other "airs"- "alkaline air (ammonia gas)", nitrous air (nitric acid), "marine acid air" (hydrogen chloride). Priestly reported his findings in 1775. He considered that the "dephlogisticated air" was much better for the purpose of respiration and inflammation.

Another chemist who isolated oxygen was a German pharmacist Karl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786). He discovered several ways of preparing oxygen. Scheele proved that atmospheric air consists mainly of two gases: oxygen and nitrogen. It is believed that in the early stages of the earth after the crust of the earth solidified and cooled there was little or no free oxygen in the earth's atmosphere. But recently Rubey has raised doubts.

Oxygen is very important for life. Life would be impossible without any oxygen, it is essential for all living organisms.

ТЕСТ I.

Прочитайте текст. Укажите на бланке ответов номера предложений, которые соответствуют содержанию текста.

"Chlorine" comes from the Greek word "chloros" (green). It is a member of the family of elements called halogens in Group VII of the Periodic Table. Chlorine is an element with atomic number 17, its atomic weight is 35.5. It is a gas at ordinary temperatures. Chlorine is never found free in nature, only combined with other elements. At normal temperatures chlorine is a diatomic gas (C12), greenish yellow in color, toxic and two and a half times as heavy as air. It liquefies at atmospheric pressure to a yellowish liquid that is heavier than water and freezes at -100.98°C. Unlike oxygen chlorine is a poison if it is inhaled; it burns and inflames the lungs and upper respiratory tract. It was employed as the poison gas during World War I.

Chlorine is soluble in water and exerts bacterial and bleaching action by reacting with water forming acid. The acid is unstable, it gives up oxygen and the oxygen destroys bacteria. It also oxidizes colored organic substances forming colorless or less colored components.

Chlorine is a very active element, it is the second most active of the nonmetals and ranks in reactivity with oxygen. Chlorine combines with hydrogen and most nonmetals except nitrogen, carbon and oxygen. Exposure to a little direct sunlight is enough to explore a mixture of hydrogen and chlorine. Chlorine also unites with many metals except gold and platinum. It participates in a number of important organic reactions and can appear in the final product. Chlorine is generally produced by electrolysis of water solutions of sodium chloride in electrolytic cells. When sodium chloride or potassium chloride solutions are subjected to electrolysis we obtain three products: caustic soda or caustic potash, chlorine and hydrogen. Chlorine is an important element in many drugs such as chloral and anesthetic chloroform.
