ТЕСТ 1.

Прочитайте текст. Укажите на бланке ответов номера предложений, которые соответствуют содержанию текста.

Nonmetallic elements are not very great in number. Among them are the gases nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, chlorine and solids silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon. The most abundant gas in our planet is oxygen. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas, constituting about 21 per cent of the atmosphere by volume. Oxygen is not only the most abundant but it is also very important for life. Life would be impossible without oxygen, this gas is essential for all living organisms. Oxygen does not burn but it supports combustion. It enters into combustion with nearly all the metals. A compound of oxygen with another element or a radical is called oxide. When an element combines with oxygen it oxidizes or undergoes oxidation.

Nitrogen is the 17th most abundant element of the Earth's crust. It is a colorless, odorless, tasteless diatomic gas. Nitrogen constitutes four-fifths of the atmosphere by volume. It is slightly soluble in water and alcohol. Nitrogen occurs free in the atmosphere. Like oxygen it enters into the formation of all living organisms. When nitrogen forms compounds they are usually unstable, many of these react so easily and rapidly, that an explosion results. Nitrogen forms a series of oxides and acids. The most important of them is nitric acid, HNO3. The organic compounds of nitrogen are more numerous than the inorganic ones. The compound of nitrogen and oxygen, nitrous oxide (N2O) is an anesthetic. Nitrogen is a vital element of protoplasm, it forms 16 per cent of all living tissue.

Silicon is a bluish - grey metalloid which has a metallic luster and is very brittle. It has a specific gravity of 2.42, melts at 1.420°C and boils at 3.500°C. It has an atomic weight of 28. This element is usually tetravalent in its compounds. Elementary silicon is used as an alloying constituent to strenghthen copper. magnesium, aluminum and other metals.

ТЕСТ I.

Прочитайте текст. Укажите на бланке ответов номера предложений, которые соответствуют содержанию текста

"Chlorine" comes from the Greek word "chloros" (green). It is a member of the family of elements called halogens in Group VII of the Periodic Table. Chlorine is an element with atomic number 17, its atomic weight is 35.5. It is a gas at ordinary temperatures. Chlorine is never found free in nature, only combined with other elements. At normal temperatures chlorine is a diatomic gas (C12), greenish yellow in color, toxic and two and a half times as heavy as air. It liquifies at atmospheric pressure to a yellowish liquid that is heavier than water and freezes at -100.98°C. Unlike oxygen chlorine is a poison if it is inhaled; it burns and inflames the lungs and upper respiratory tract. It was employed as the poison gas during World War I.

Chlorine is soluble in water and exerts bacterial and bleaching action by reacting with water forming acid. The acid is unstable, it gives up oxygen and the oxygen destroys bacteria. It also oxidizes colored organic substances forming colorless or less colored components.

Chlorine is a very active element, it is the second most active of the nonmetals and ranks in reactivity with oxygen. Chlorine combines with hydrogen and most nonmetals except nitrogen, carbon and oxygen. Exposure to a little direct sunlight is enough to explore a mixture of hydrogen and chlorine. Chlorine also unites with many metals except gold and platinum. It participates in a number of important organic reactions and can appear in the final product. Chlorine is generally produced by electrolysis of water solutions of sodium chloride in electrolytic cells. When sodium chloride or potassium chloride solutions are subjected to electrolysis we obtain three products: caustic soda or caustic potash, chlorine and hydrogen. Chlorine is an important element in many drugs such as chloral and anesthetic chloroform.
