My name is Olga Petrova. I am 17 years old. I come from Ryazan. I am {not) married. I entered Ryazan State University in 2012. Now I am a first-year student at the faculty of Economics/ Sociology and Management. I study at the (correspondent) department of regional economy/ taxes and taxation/ business accounting and audit/finance and credit/personnel management. I am good at mathematics. I am interested in humanities. I believe my future specialty is necessary and useful. I hope it will be in demand and I will become a qualified specialist.

  1. Our university

Ryazan State University was founded in 1915 as a teachers’ training institute for women. Later it was renamed and reorganized several times. Now it is named after the great Russian poet S. A. Yesenin. There are 45 departments. 8 faculties and 2 institutes that train about 11,000 fall-time and part-time students.

The main building of the university is housed in Svoboda Street. There are lecture halls, study rooms, modem labs. There is also a library and two reading halls. There is a conference hall, a gym, two buffets, a canteen, and a book shop. There is a chapel in the yard behind the university building.

There are hostels for students from other cities. The university has grown over the recent years and now different faculties are situated in different parts of the city. An academic year is divided into 2 terms. The program consists of special and social subjects, physical training and all the students study foreign languages. Students attend lectures and seminars, lake exams at the end of the term, and participate in scientific research. To get a Bachelor’s degree it’s necessary to study for 4 years. Those who want to continue their education study tor two more years to get a Master’s degree. After graduating the students get diplomas which give them the right to work in the sphere of a chosen profession.

3.Great Britain

The Uni ted Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of 4 parts: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The country is situated on the British Isles. They are washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea and are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel.

Great Britain attracts millions of tourists because it looks like one great beautiful park. The main rivers are the Thames, the Clyde, and the Severn. The mountains are not high. The highest mountain, Ben Nevis (1, 343 m high) is in Scotland. The climate is mild: summers are not hot and winters are not cold. But the weather is rainy thanks to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.

The population of the UK is about 60 million people. The capital of the country is London. The country is a member of the European Union. The national currency is pound.

The UK is a highly developed industrial country. It produces and exports machinery, electronics, textiles, ships. The foundation of agriculture is dairy and meat industries, sheep farming. The industrial centres are Liverpool, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield. The UK is not rich in mineral resources, but it has deposits of oil, gas, coal, chalk, and iron ore.

The UK is a parliamentary monarchy. The Queen (today it’s Elizabeth II) is the head of the state, but the real power belongs to the Parliament, which consists of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. There are 3 main political parties in Britain: the Conservative Party, the Labour Party, and the Liberal Party. Britain’s flag is called Union Jack.

4. London

London is the capita! of Great Britain. It is over 2000 yeais old. Originally it was a Roman settlement on the banks of the river Thames. Then it grew into the largest city of Europe. Its population is about 11 miliion people. About one fifth of the total population of the UK lives in the Greater London area, which includes London and its suburbs. raditionally London is divided into 3 big parts besides several small ones (Chelsea, Soho): the City, the West End, and the East End. Numerous banks, offices, the London Stock Exchange, the Commodity exchange are located in the City, the commercial center of London.

The West End and the area of Westminster are the heart of London. The largest shops, theatres, museums, the National Gallery, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, and Buckingham Palace are situated there. The name “West End” is associated with wealth.

In contrast, the East End is unattractive, but very important to the country’s economy, because here you cart find docks, factories and plants. The Port of London is situated in this area.

London is very old, but many of its ancient buildings still stand, such as the Tower of London, built in 1066, and St. Paul’s Cathedral, built in the 17th century'.
