Chapter 8

Client and Server Configurations for L2TP/IPsec

Most of the information in this chapter regarding the installation and configuration of L2TP was originally collected by Jacco de Leeuw. He can be considered the definitive source on connecting Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X via L2TP to an Openswan VPN server. In fact, even Microsoft employees copy his information verbatim to their customers. Visit his site at

http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/index.html for the latest information.

In our examples, the Openswan server is configured as a standard VPN gateway for home users to access a single office network, which uses 192.168.1.0/24. The office DHCP server hands out addresses in the range 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.127, while the L2TP server hands out virtual IP addresses in the range 192.168.1.128 to 192.168.1.254. One could imagine that the company servers have IP addresses in the range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.99. The VPN server for our example company is called aivd.xelerance.com and has a public ISP-assigned IP address of 193.110.157.131 and an internal IP address of 192.168.1.98.
