4. Read the description of Maria below. Then complete her e-mail to a friend. Use words or phrases from the reading. See the example.

Maria works as a telephonist in a shopping centre. Her workspace is a cubicle with a computer and a telephone exchange. She answers calls all day. She gets them from customers, but also from suppliers about orders and deliveries. On a normal day she can get over five hundred calls. The worst thing is that people think she is responsible for everything. People are always complaining abut things and shouting at her. One man wanted her to tell him how to cook a fish! Of course, she can‘t hang up. She thinks that in the end she‘ll give up her job because she suffers from stress. When the phone rings at home, she jumps. She wants to disconnect the phone, but her husband needs it for his work.

University of London

1. The University of London is a federation of more than 50 British institutions of higher learning, located primarily in London. Its department of extra-mural studies enrols nearly 12,000 persons. One of the colleges, Birkbeck

College, accepts for undergraduate work ―only part-time students who earn their living during the day‖.

2. The university was a product of the Liberal movement of the 19th century. Following a call by poet Thomas Campbell in 1825 for a university to provide education for the class between the ―mechanics‖ and the ―enormously rich,‖ liberals and religious dissenters founded London University (now University College) in 1826; instruction began in 1828. In 1836 University College had to join forces with King‘s College and the University of London was created as an

38

administrative entity that would hold no classes of its own but would examine and grant degrees to the students of the two colleges.

3. Under the Supplemental Charter of 1849, it became possible for students from any institution of higher learning anywhere in the British Empire to be examined by the university and awarded a University of London degree. Students from institutions as different as the University of Oxford and the Working Men's College of London thereby could become recipients of London degrees. In 1858 students who were not enrolled in any institution were allowed to become degree candidates.

4. By the early 20th century many other institutions had been affiliated with the university, including the London School of Economics and Political Science, now an internationally respected centre for the study of social science; and three institutions that later became the Imperial College of Science and Technology. In 1900 the university was authorized to begin offering its own courses.
