The National Health Service in Great Britain
It is generally the goal of many countries to have their health services. National Health Service is a government program that provides health services for the majority of people in a country. These services are organized to ensure that individuals, families and communities obtain the maximum benefit from current knowledge and technology which are available for promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health.
The National Health Service in England was inaugurated on July 5, 1948 by the Minister for Health under the National Health Service Act of 1946.
The number of doctors in England is not quite enough to serve millions of patients treated at the National Health Service. Nurses are also in short supply.
All doctors may take part in the Family Doctor System. They may have private practice receiving the pay directly from the patients for their medical advice. Health Service doctors are paid by the government. The pay depends on the number of patients they have served every month. The hospital service includes general and special hospitals, tuberculosis sanatoria, infectious disease units and all forms of specialized treatment together with the provision of most surgical and medical needs.
In the main this part of the service is organized by 15 Regional Hospital Boards. In each hospital area there is a University having a teaching hospital or a medical school.
The most obvious and the most important function of National Health Services is the curative function; that is to say caring for those who are already ill. Other functions of National Health Services can include special services that deal with particular groups (such as children or pregnant women) and with specific needs such as nutrition or immunization. These functions can also include preventive services, the protection of the health both of individuals and of communities and health education.
The British National Health Service is a system of State-funded medical care that covers all the people of the UK.
