Not so many years ago, the metal aluminum was simply a scientific curiosity. A way of producing is was known, but this method took so much time and was so costly that very little aluminum was made or used. Then, in 1886, an American named Hall and a Frenchman named Heroult independently developed the same process for producing aluminum cheaply. Shortly after this, aluminum came into wide use. Aluminum is a remarkable metal. It is malleable, which it can be hammered into shape without breaking. Like gold and silver, aluminum is light in weight, and at the same time, unusually strong. These properties make it invaluable in the manufacture of airplanes. Moreover, aluminum does not rust and it is not affected by salt water. It is one of our best conductors of heat and, pound for pound, it conducts electricity better than any other metal. Because of this combination of valuable properties, aluminum is used in construction, for transmitting electrical power over long distances, and for making doors, windows, utensils, furniture, appliances, and many other things.
