Foreword
This self-help book was written in response to several major trends in medicine. Any experienced physician knows that prevention of an illness is the best cure. By understanding the factors that contribute to your sinus problems, you can hopefully avoid or at least minimize them. Among the most common illnesses for which people seek medical advice are colds, allergies, and sinus ailments. All of these subjects are explained in easily understood terms in the chapters that follow. Many of the symptoms associated with these illnesses can be relieved with self-help measures. With the increasing number of medications now available without a prescription, consumers need an understanding of which products are effective and which should be avoided. Unfortunately,

many widely advertised "sinus products" may be inappropriate. The chapter on medications explains how to select nonprescription medications for optimal relief of your symptoms. While many nasal and sinus problems lend themselves to simple solutions, some progress or recur to the point that make evaluation and treatment by a physician necessary. An understanding of factors that may be contributing to these illnesses will enable you to present pertinent background information to your physician, improving the chance of an effective treatment program. Since many of the illnesses covered in this book also affect children, parents will find many suggestions to help recognize problems and provide relief until medical help can be obtained. For the vast number of people affected by disorders of the nose and sinuses, this book should provide a lot of helpful and practical information to start them on the road to recovery.

Chapter 1
Introduction to the Sinuses
As an ear, nose, and throat doctor, I see at least five patients a day who tell me that they have "sinus trouble." Take, for example, Jesse, a twenty-five-year-old woman who had suffered through one week of pressure in her cheeks and forehead, thick, yellow mucus coming from her nose, and clogging of her ears. Despite using over-the-counter drugs, she still couldn't breathe out of her nose and had touble making it through a day of work. After ten days of using a prescription antibiotic and an oral decongestant, she was back to normal and never had another nasal problem for years.
Joe, on the other hand, was a forty-year-old marketing executive who, after moving to an old farmhouse near Princeton, New Jersey, began noticing "sinus problems" of

facial pressure and headache. In addition, he had resumed smoking because of the increased pressures at work. When allergy-testing revealed that he was a highly allergic individual, he made his home as dust free as possible and put in an air-filtering system. When he was also able to quit smoking, his headaches subsided.
Jeff, an otherwise healthy five year old, was brought in by his parents because of his "sinuses." He had a constant runny nose and deep cough despite many months of different medications from his pediatrician. Once his adenoids were removed and his sinuses drained, his breathing and nasal problems normalized.
These are just three examples of the many ways that sinus problems can present and be treated. Jesse had an acute, shortlived sinus infection that responded well to medical treatment. Joe's sinus problems had a strong allergy component that needed to be addressed for ultimate resolution of his symptoms. And Jeff's was a case of childhood sinusitis. These three, like another 30 to 35 million Americans, have "sinus problems." In fact, sinus symptoms are one of the most common complaints that leads a patient to a doctor's office. Roughly 20 million office visits occur in the United States yearly because of sinus disease, resulting in 16 million prescriptions written each year.
Before we can discuss sinus disorders and their treatment, we must first understand what sinuses are and how they function. What happens in the sinus is often closely related to the nose, so nasal function will also be considered.
