NATIONAL DIFFERENCES TO INTERNATIONAL CODE FORMS - EUROPE

AUSTRIA

If deposit of rime is observed the description FZ is used in combination with abbreviations BCFG, PRFG and BR too.

When the term CAVOK is used in reports in abbreviated plain language, visibility, present weather and clouds are reported in brackets.

For routine reports from aeronautical stations not located at international airports the following applies:

instead of the ICAO location indicator the station index number (IIiii) is used by stations not located at an aerodrome.

the term CAVOK is not used.

for reporting maximum horizontal visibility additional criteria are used; so this group will be reported more often.

when the visibility is 10Km or more, at some stations it is coded in steps of 1Km up to 30Km and in steps of 5Km above 30Km, followed by the abbreviation KM (e.g. visibility of 23Km is coded as 23KM and 99KM indicates a visibility of 100Km or more).

All cloud types are reported, e.g. OVC010ST.

The height of cloud base is not reported for the cloud types CI, CC and CS, e.g. SCTCI.

hs hs hs = not reported if in mountainous region tops, but not the cloud base of a convective cloud is visible, e.g. FEWCB.

The indicator RMK is reported in the AUTO METAR for the notification of cloud bases.

After RMK, the data will be reported as follows:

BASE XX CLDhhh, e.g.: BASE AB CLD015

XXlocation identifier of ceilometer (single of double figure)

hhh

cloud base as in METAR

Ceilometer location identifiers are:

NNorth

SSouth

WWest

EEast

28

threshold RWY 28

AB

Absam

KE

Kematen

Cloud amount will not be reported.

FRANCE

The term CAVOK is not used in messages from fully automatic observation systems.

SPECI messages are produced when the visibility is improving and reaching or exceeding 5000m, or also when worsening and reaching less than 5000m.

RVR is not subject to SPECI messages.

SPECI messages are produced when following phenomena appear or stop:

– freezing precipitation;

moderate or strong snowfall, ice pellets, hail, soft hail, and/or snow pellets, rain and snow mixed;

drifting dust, drifting sand, drifting snow;

duststorm;

sandstorm;

snowstorm.

SPECI messages are produced when the height of base for the lowest cloud layer of BKN or OVC increases and reaches or is more than, or decreases and is less than 450m.

Vertical visibility is not subject to local routine and special reports, METAR and SPECI.

The weather phenomena SG, PL, IC, GR, DS, SS, PO, FC, SA, DU, HZ, FU, VA, SQ are not reported in messages from fully automatic observation systems.

MI, BC, PR, DR and BL are not indicated in messages from fully automatic observation systems.

Except for VCTS coding, VC is not specified in reports from fully automatic observation systems.

For some aerodromes, in the local observation messages, the cloud base height is indicated every 30ft below 300ft.

c. “Windshear Reported” (WSR)-when an aircraft has reported on the approach or climb-out within the last hour, but insufficient meteorological evidence exists for the issue of a forecast of windshear.

NOTE: On all other aerodromes, the CAVOK application rule will be:”No cloud below 5000 ft and absence of cumulonimbus (CB) and towering cumulus (TCU)”.

ITALY

Italy issues a report called TAD (Thunderstorm Area Detection). The report provides the following elements:

ICAO reporting code and sequence number;

validity;

echo intensity;

echo extension;

associated phenomena (present weather);

echo position;

top of clouds;

movement forecast;

intensity forecast;

remark.

NETHERLANDS

Automated reports contain only a subset of the complete set of PRESENT WEATHER codes in comparison with METAR/SPECI. The following weather phenomena or descriptors can not be reported: FC, SS, DS, PO, SA, DU, FU, VA, MI, BC, PR, DR and BL. NSC and CAVOK shall not be encoded in automated reports.

UNITED KINGDOM

The abbreviation NSC (no significant cloud) will be used if there are no clouds of operational significance, no TCU or CB and the abbreviations CAVOK and SKC are not appropriate.

Observations of vertical visibility are not made in the UK.

Information on wind shear is not added to METAR reports in the UK.

Following abbreviations have been adopted at London (Heathrow) for use in their Windshear Alerting Service.

a.“Windshear Forecast” (WSF)-when the meteorological conditions indicate that low level windshear on the approach or climb-out (below 2000ft) may be encountered.

b.“Windshear Forecast and Reported” (WSRF)-as above, supported by a report from at least one aircraft of windshear on the approach or climbout within the last hour.
