The structure of the examination and the assessment criteria

Final assessment in the subject "History of the English Language” is done in the form of the oral examination. Oral examination is conducted by examination cards. Each card includes three questions:

  1. Theoretical question on the material of specific properties of Germanic languages or linguistic peculiarities of the language of the Old English period.

  2. Theoretical question on the material of the linguistic properties of the language of the Middle English or New English period.

  3. Practical assignment which envisages the phonological, grammatical and lexical analysis of the excerpt of the text belonging to one of the above-mentioned periods with special attention to the underlined parts, and the translation of the excerpt into Modern English (if required).

Each student is assessed individually. The student can get the following marks for the answer to the first question:

Execellent “5” if the student demonstrates:

  • complete and profound exposition of the theoretical problem without making mistakes in the English language

  • correct formulating of the essence of the main linguistic phenomena under discussion.

Good “4”

  • the student demonstrates logical and correct, as regards its contents, exposition of the material in good linguistic form though allows of one - two mistakes as to the essence of the material under discussion.

Satisfactory “3”

  • the student demonstrates the general knowledge of the problem under discussion but allows of some inexactitudes or a gross mistake; the knowledge of the material is superficial and the examiner has to ask additional questions to clear up the point; the linguistic presentation is satisfactory.

Bad “2”

  • the student cannot present logical answer to the question under discussion; a student cannot answer additional questions directed at clearing up the point; the student allows of more than one gross mistake, as regards the contents of the material;

  • the linguistic presentation abounds in different mistakes; the student makes use of the materials which are not allowed to be used at the examination; the student refuses to answer the question.

The second question is evaluated by analogy with the first.

The third question, practical assignment is evaluated in the following way:

Execellent “5”

  • the student presents the complete phonological, grammatical and lexicological analysis of all the underlined linguistic units and the translation into Modern English if required.

Good “4”

  • the student presents the analysis of all the underlined linguistic units, though allows some inexactitudes and corrects them after the additional questions of the examiner.

Satisfactory “3”

  • the student does not present the analysis of all the underlined linguistic units but analyses only half of the general number of the units;

  • presents the correct translation of the excerpt.

Bad “2”

  • the student presents the analysis only of some one or two linguistic units;

  • the student does not present one of the required analysis (phonological, morphological, lexicological);

  • the linguistic presentation abounds in mistakes;

  • the student makes use of the material which is not allowed;

  • the student refuses to answer the question.

The evaluation in points for every question of the card is exerted in accordance with the table:

“5” – 10 points;

“4” – 8 points;

“3” – 6 points;

“2” – 4 points

The points are summed up and added to the points for the in-class and self-study work as it was shown in part VI.
