RUSSIA. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Ancient Russian State camе into existence in the 9th century. The capital of the State was Kiev. In the course of time it became a large political and cultural centre in Eastern Europe. From that time on Kiev was known as “Mother of the Russian Cities”.

The tragic period of the history of Russia was connected with the Mongol-Tartar Yoke. The Tartars conquered Russia, burned Kiev to the ground and ruled for about 250 years. The Russians went on paying tribute for a long time, until Ivan the IIId finally defeated them.

At the end of the 15th century Moscow developed into the main city and the capital of the Russian Empire.

The turning point in the development of Russia began with the governing of the Russian Tsar Peter the Great. He contributed greatly to the overcoming of economic, cultural and military backwardness of Russia.

Since 1703 St. Petersburg became the capital of the Russia State. But long-suffering Russia had still to face with and overcome three revolutions and the War against fascist Germany.

Nevertheless Russia always stayed independent and unsubdued.

SOME GLIMPSES OF RUSSIAN HISTORY

Part I (to be continued)

About a thousand years ago, in a Monastery in the depths of the Great Russian forests, an old monk sat writing the first history of the Russian people. He called It “The Chronicle, of Times Past”, but we know it as “The Chronicle of Nestor”.

Before Nestor's time the Russian states were not united, and they continually had to fight against the tribes of the pirates of the Baltic, who used to raid the Russian lands, and destroy the cities. The biggest cities of Russia were Novgorod in the North and Kiev in the South.

For many years Novgorod was one of the most important cities of Russia. As well as one of the richest.

The Vikings who Invaded England came from Norway and Denmark; those who invaded Russia came from Norway and Russians used to call them Varangians.

They were pirate-merchants. There were many quarrels between the Russians and the Varangians. After one quarrel the Russians sent an invitation to a distant Varangian prince called Rurik to come and to govern them.

Answer the questions:

1. Who wrote the first history of Russia?

2. How was it called?

3. How did the Russian states live before Nestor's time?

4. Who were Varangians?

5. Whom did the Russians send invitation to and why?
