ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ

Пособие рекомендовано студентам заочного отделения экономических специальностей, овладевших основами нормативной грамматики и лексики в объеме программы средней общеобразовательной школы и приступающих к изучению английского языка как языка специальности.

В пособии решаются такие задачи, как совершенствование навыков правильного грамматического оформления речи. Грамматический материал первой части пособия охватывает важнейшие и наиболее функциональные разделы грамматики современного английского языка. Все упражнения составлены с учетом экономической лексики для последующего использования в практике делового общения.

Вторая часть пособия посвящена проблемам трудоустройства. Информационный материал пособия знакомит студентов с англо-американской школой бизнеса. Цель второй части пособия – развитие навыков чтения и письма на английском языке, а также навыков делового общения и монологического высказывания. Чтение современных текстов позволяет значительно пополнить словарный запас, обогатить речь идиоматическими выражениями, помочь развить важные в деловом мире качества: умение разбираться в партнерах по переговорам, умение анализировать сложные ситуации и находить выход из них.

В пособии представлены специальные советы и практические задания по подготовке и правильному оформлению документов, анкет, резюме и сопроводительных писем.

Закреплению знаний способствуют соответствующие формы работы: чтение и анализ текстов, ответы на вопросы, работа в парах, дискуссии, изучение терминологического комментария. Задания составлены таким образом, чтобы студенты подходили к их выполнению творчески, привлекая свои собственные идеи и опыт. Все это обеспечивает высокую степень усвоения и активизации материала, хороший уровень устных навыков и создает прочную базу для дальнейшего углубленного изучения английского языка.

В конце пособия помещено приложение, в котором представлены полезные выражения при подготовке резюме.

CHAPTER I THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE

The use of the Present Simple.

Routines.

Examples:

Klaus Schmidt is a Sales Manager. He often gives presentations to

prospective clients and regularly attends sales meetings in other

countries. In his free time, he plays tennis and listens to music.

They increase their prices every year.

Jane sometimes goes to work by train.

He doesn’t travel abroad very often.

"Do they ever play football?" "Yes, they do."

How often does the sales team meet?

We always send copies of me report to the Managing Director.

2) General facts / truths.

Examples:

A good manager tells his staff what to do, but also listens to their

opinions.

The sun rises in the East,

In England most shops close at 5.30 p. m.

He works for BMW.

His parents don't like pop music.

What does this word mean?

3) Future schedules.

Examples;

The train leaves at 12.00 and arrives at 13-00.

The meeting begins at 10.00.

What time does the plane leave?

We arrive in Edinburgh at 11.00 and then visit the castle.

You are telling a colleague about the programme for next week's conference. Put the verbs into correct form in the passage below. (Use the Present Simple for future schedules).

The conference (1) ___ (begin) at nine. It (2) ___ (start) with an introductory session and (3) ___ (continue) with a talk about sales performance. After that, we (4) ___ (divide) into small groups and (5) ___ (discuss) various points. The discussion (6) ____ (continue) after lunch. After that, there is a plenary session which the Sales Director (7) ___ (lead). The first day (8) ___ (finish) at around six.

Look at the quiz below. Work in pairs or groups and answer the questions.

1. I answer the phone and type letters. What is my job?

2. Which is correct? The sun goes round the earth or the earth goes round the sun?

3. Maria comes from South America but she doesn’t speak Spanish. What nationality is she?

4. You work for a multinational company. This company produces chocolate, coffee, baby milk and many other things. Who do you work for?

5. This machine does the washing up. What is its name?

6. Some of the men in this country wear skirts, called kilts. Where do they live?

7. It flies from Paris to New York in 3.5 hours. What is it?

8. This city has two parts, with the river in the middle. The names of the two parts make the name of the city. Its name begins with B.

9. Some people use them for writing documents, but most people don't use them any more - they prefer to use computers. What are these objects?

10. How long does it take Eurostar (the Channel Tunnel train) to travel from London to Paris?

11. It rings or buzzes when it's time to wake up. What is the name of this object?

12. We manufacture and sell luxury cars. We also make plane engines. Who are we?

Be careful! Some verbs are not regular. Look at the quiz again. Fill each gap in the sentences below. Use the correct form of the verb.

Work in pairs. Take turns to describe one of the things below. Your partner must decide what you are talking about

Examples:

You eat it in Italy and all over the world. > pizza They're animals. They live in Africa or India. > elephants

Giovanna Appolloni lives in Milan and works in finance. Think of five things she does and five things she doesn't do. Use these words to help you.

come, work, live, visit, start, go, use, play, wear, travel, like, speak, finish.

Work in pairs. Take turns to make three sentences about yourself and three sentences about someone else. Toss a coin. When it's heads, make a positive sentence. When it's tails, make a sentence in the negative form.

Examples:

Heads: My boss speaks very good English.

Tails: Our teacher doesn't speak very good Spanish.

Look at the questions about Giovanna. Match each question on the left with an answer on the right.

Now work in pairs. Cover the questions. Take turns to ask and answer the questions.

Work in pairs. Think of questions for a general knowledge quiz. Ask your questions in a quiz.

Choose a right verb and fill each gap in the sentences below. Use the correct form of the verb.

Fill each gap with the words below. Be careful! Sometimes you need to change the spelling of the verb or use the negative form. (Short forms, for example, DOESN'T, take one gap).

Now think of two questions that you want to ask Mikhail or Elizabeth. Write them.

Think of a person you know. Write his / her name. Then write seven things about this person.
