Instead she steered the coach on to the hard shoulder then, after 300 yards, managed to bring it to a standstill by running it alongside the crash barriers.

Driver Mark Davies, 30, only regained consciousness when the coach came to a standstill after tearing off 60 yards of barrier.

PC Alan Griffths of West Midlands motorway police said: ‘There is no doubt that Miss McCall's quick thinking saved this from being a far more serious incident’.

'People could have been killed or injured'.

The coach was on its way from the Wirral in Merseyside to Victoria Coach Station in London.

The drama happened near Solihull just after 3 p.m. Miss McCall, who was seated next to the driver, at first tried to revive him. When that failed she grabbed the wheel.

None of the passengers was hurt and they continued their journey on a relief coach together with Miss McCall, who is 40 today.

The driver was taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch with minor head injuries.

Christine Warren, spokeswoman for National Express, said: ‘Tina acted in an exemplary manner and averted what could have been an extremely serious incident’.

Assignment 19

Read the following article and write a headline for it, summarizing the information.

NEW YORK - A rare portrait from Picasso's blue period sold Monday for more than $29 million - three times its estimated value and the most a painting has brought in at auction in five years.

‘We're delighted with the sale’, says Matthew Weigman, Sotheby's spokesman. The high price is considered an indication the art market - in a slump since 1990 - might be heating up.

Another sign: the $14.85 million sale of The Hindu Pose by Henri Matisse, best price ever for a Matisse sold at auction.

Bidding for Picasso's Angel Fernandez de Soto, also called The Absinthe Drinker, began at $8 million and rose until a phone bid went unanswered.

Including commission, the anonymous private collector paid $29,152,500.

The 1903 portrait of Picasso's friend in a Barcelona cafe sold for $22,000 in 1946.

The last major Picasso auctioned was Yo Picasso, which sold for $47.9 million in 1989.

Assignment 20

Read the following article and choose the most appropriate headline for it:

  1. Arrest in Okinawa.

  2. Rapist arrested in Japan.

  3. US sergeant held in Okinawa.

  4. Anti-US base protests in Okinawa.

A 33-year-old US serviceman was arrested on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa yesterday for allegedly indecently assaulting a 28-year-old local woman on Monday, a police official said. The official named the serviceman as Air Force Sergeant Danny Matlock, stationed at the Kadena base on Okinawa. The rape of a 12-year-old girl by three US servicemen in 1995 triggered the biggest anti-US base protests on the island in more than 30 years, leading to a US pledge last year to return some 20 per cent of Okinawa land used by the US military. Okinawa hosts the biggest US military bases in south-east Asia. Two-thirds of the 47,000 US troops in Japan are on the island, which accounts for less than 1 per cent of Japanese territory.
