Historian

I’m Jonathan Cooper. I work in the Education Department of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. It is my job to help visitors to understand and enjoy the works of art here and I tell them about the history of our country in paintings. I do this by speaking, writing and sometimes setting up special exhibitions.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is a large public art museum near the centre of Sydney. It has collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and artists’ prints.

Visitors can look at the collection, visit special exhibitions, watch films or videos on art and artists, study art books in the Gallery Library, visit the Gallery shop, have lunch or a snack at the café or restaurant.

Publisher

I am a publisher for “The Macquarie dictionary” publishing company. My name is Susan Butler. What makes Australian English different from other Englishes of the world? Well-its history for a start. The British government established a convict settlement. The convicts and settlers took English and adapted it to their new home by changing the meaning of the words or borrowing new ones.

An easy way for English to expand in Australia was to borrow from the Aboriginal languages, particularly in describing flora and fauna.

Some animals were named this way, such as, the kangaroo, koala and wombat. The kookaburra, a popular Australian bird that sounds like a human laughing, was also named this way.

Politician

I’m Chris Bush. I’m a politician. Australia’s national day is on 26 January marks the day in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip, of the British Royal Navy, commanded a fleet of 11 ships and sailed into Port Jackson (Sydney Cove).

The flag of Australia- the small Union Jack represents the historical link with Britain, the large seven-pointed star represents the six States and Territories and small stars form the Southern Cross- a prominent feature of southern hemisphere night sky.

Teacher

I’m Carry Maas, the teacher at Strathmore Secondary College. Each state and territory in Australia makes its own laws about education. We have private and public schools.

Australia’s primary or elementary school consists of grades one through six. Secondary school consists of grade seven through twelve.

In Australia large schools are found along the coast. One teacher schools are located farther out in the countryside. A teacher in the country may teach all grades, with only one or two students in a grade. Students living far from the city attend “Schools in the Air”. They listen to the teacher by the radio.

Sportsman

I’m Harry Ford. I am the sportsman. My favourite sports are table tennis. I started playing when I was seven years old. Do you like table tennis as I do? It is a very popular game. In fact, more people in the world play table tennis than any other game.

Do you know that table tennis became on Olympic game in 1988. The ball can be yellow and white. It weighs 2.5 grammes. The table is dark green. It is 1.52 metres long and 1.37 metres wide. The net is 15.25 centimeters high. It divides the table into two halves.

Student

I’m sixteen years old and attend high school in Sydney. My school has a happy and cheerful atmosphere. Everyone gets along with each other. We wear a uniform that represents our school, Casimir College.

I live in Australia but my background is Lebanese and I’m proud of that. In Australia there are people from many different cultures, religions and backgrounds. I come from a big family of five children and I have a Mum and a Dad.

When I grow up I wish to become a news reporter on TV.

Biologist

My name is Pete Jones. I’m the biologist. You know that Australia has been isolated for long periods of time, so there has been little exchange of animals with the rest of the world.

Australia’s climate is often unpredictable. There may be long periods of drought, frequent floods, or fires. These sorts of problems require unique adaptations. For example, the Red Kangaroo can suspend the development of its embryo until conditions improve.

Australia has a huge number of bird species- about three times as many as Europe. More than 400 species of reptiles are known in Australia.

The most known and loved animals, the national symbols of Australia are- the kangaroo, the koala, the kangaroo, koala, echidna, dingo, platypus, wallaby and wombat.

Pilot

I’m Steven Gifford. Do you know how to get to Australia? The total distance from Moscow, Russia to Sidney, Australia is 9,001 miles. This is equivalent to 14,486 kilometers or 7,822 nautical miles.

Your travel direction from Moscow to Sydney is East (93 degrees from North).

Travel Time: 18 hours by plane.

Time difference: when you are in Sydney, subtract:

■ 1 hour to find local time in Tokyo

■ 2 hours- in Hong Kong

■ 9 hours- in Paris

■ 10 hours- in London

■ 15 hours- in New York

■ 18 hours- in San Francisco

Shop-assistant

I’m Kate Bentley. I’m a florist. I like my job. Australians usually send flowers for special occasions, such as, the birth of a baby, weddings, birthdays and funerals. Australia has a special day called “Daffodil Day” on the 1st of September. On this day it is a tradition to buy a bunch of daffodils as a sigh of respect for cancer sufferers.
