The interview – a science or an art?

In a country where jobs are not guaranteed and employers interview several people for each job, the job interview has become a science. This science can be learned, but there is an important point to remember. Not everyone is successful on a first interview. A successful interview takes plenty of practice.

The key to any successful interview is preparation. There are several things to think about before you go on an interview:

What do you know about the company?

What skills do you have that specifically fit the job?

What questions do you expect the interviewer to ask you?

What questions should you ask the interviewer?

When you go on an interview, you are at an important point in the job search. The interviewer is interested in you. You may be the person he or she is looking for. But you must prove that you understand the company’s needs and that you have the professional skills and personal attributes to do the job. Be ready to speak confidently about yourself. Before the interview, write down a detailed record of your accomplishments: the things you have done over the years, and problems you have confronted and solved. Then write down the ways in which your experience relates to the needs of your job. Practice saying these things loud: reading them is not enough.

If there are any factors against you, such as lack of certain experience, be prepared to explain to the employer how you plan to overcome your deficiencies.
