Ex.16. Use the correct pronoun.

  1. I read very many English books. I read … in the evening.

  2. Lavrov is speaking to Mr. Bell now. He is speaking to… about the contract.

  3. Kate is my friend. I meet … in the office every day.

  4. My daughter is reading a book about London now. She is reading … with pleasure.

  5. I often write letters to my friends. And they often write letters to … too.

Ex.17. Choose the correct pronoun.

  1. Lavrov comes to (his, him) English lessons at 8 o’clock in the morning.

Ex.19. Use the nouns in the possessive case.

Model: The car of the Commercial Director. – Commercial Director’s car.

Ex.20. Ask and answer as in the model. Practise the use of much, many, little, few.

a) --Have you got many English books?

-- No, I have got few. But I have got many French books.

Prompts: contracts with British companies; offers from French companies; friends in Minsk; German journals; English newspapers.

b) – Do you drink much coffee?

-- No, I drink little coffee every day.

Prompts: milk; tea; tea with milk; juice; white coffee.

  1. -- Do you read much or little?

-- I read very much.

Prompts: work at your English; help about the house; know about London; watch TV; speak on the phone.

Ex.21. Practise the use of modal verbs.

  1. Respond as in the model.

-- Have you looked through the quotation?

-- No, I can do it in the afternoon. I must write a letter to Mr. Blake now.

Prompts: to make an appointment with Mr. Green; to translate a letter of Smith & Co; to finish reading the contract; to discuss the terms of delivery with the customers; to discuss some matters with the president; to go to the plant with the inspectors.

b) Say as in the model.

I can’t make an appointment with Mr. Green now. I’m very busy.

Prompts: to reserve a room at this hotel; to make a contract with Brown & Co; to look through the catalogue; to spend much time at the plant; to go on business.

c) Ask and answer as in the model.

-- Can I write a letter to Dunn & Co now?

-- I’ve already written it.

Prompts: to invite the businessmen to the conference room; to study the catalogues for machine tools; to show Mr. Blake our quotation; to call the manager of Dunn & Co; to tell the Director about the talks with Blake & Co.

d) – Must you make an appointment with Mr. Green?

-- Yes, I must. / No, I needn’t.

Prompts: to study foreign languages; to start work very early; to go to the office every day; to have talks in English; to look through the mail; to discuss the price for the goods.
