‘Do you speak English?’ he asked her. - He asked her if she spoke English.
‘Why are you late?’ the teacher asked me. - ‘The teacher asked me why I was late.’
Коли пряме запитання починається допоміжним дієсловом (do, is, have) або модальним дієсловом (can, may, must), тоді непряме запитання починається словами if або whether. ‘Can you speak French?’ they asked me. They asked me if/whether I could speak French.
‘Check the water levels in the pipes,’ the technician said to me. The technician told me to check the water levels in the pipes.
‘Listen to me, please,’ the teacher said to us. The teacher asked us to listen to him.
Інфінітив (the Infinitive)
The planners agreed to make the proposed changes.
It is nice to be back home.
It’s too cold to work outside today. The problem was easy enough to solve it quickly.
I’m studying to be a surveyor.
You must read the manual before operating the machine.
The teacher let me leave the classroom.
I want to be an engineer.
Суб’єкт інфінітива може бути виражений іменником (the students) або займенником в об’єктному відмінку (me, you, them та ін.). I would like the students to listen more attentively. I would like them to listen more attentively.
