1) Hello Jack! 2) I’d like to invite you to
my native city Kyiv to spend a week or two
during these summer holidays. 3) You know
that Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine, but you
can’t imagine how beautiful this city is!
4) Kyiv is located on the banks of the river
Dnipro. 5) It is an ancient city and according
to a legend it was founded by the eldest
of the three brothers, Kyi, in the fifth century.
6) Under the rule of Yaroslav the Wise
Kyivan Rus with Kyiv as its capital reached
the height of its power. 7) Kyiv has survived
throughout the centuries in spite of wars and
other disasters. 8) It has played an important
role in the development of the medieval East
Slavic civilization as well as in the modern
Ukrainian nation. 9) Modern Kyiv is a mix
of the old and the new. 10) Nowadays Kyiv
is a large political, industrial, cultural and
scientific centre. 11) But I love Kyiv not for
its historical and political importance, but
for its green parks and gardens, beautiful
buildings, gorgeous monuments and other
landmarks. 12) When you come to my place,
I’ll take you to Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. 13) It
is a unique cave monastery complex, full
of mystery and charm. 14) We’ll also visit
St Sophia’s Cathedral, which is in the heart
of the city. 15) Here guides will tell you about
Yaroslav the Wise and his role in the history
of our country. 16) And of course you’ll
enjoy the walk around Independence Square
and along Khreshchatyk, the main street of
our capital. 17) Khreshchatyk is lined with
chestnuts — the trees which are the symbol of
Kyiv. 18) In summer Khreshchatyk becomes
a large outdoor party place with lots of cafés, 59
clubs and restaurants. 19) You can’t miss
the opportunity to visit Andriyivskyi Uzviz,
either, which is one of the best-known historic
streets and a major tourist attraction.
20) The best way to travel around Kyiv is by
underground. 21) The underground in our
city is very deep, nice and clean and this is
the fastest way of getting about. 22) And it
is better to walk around the city centre to
enjoy the architecture and not to miss any
monument or a museum. 23) I’m sure you’ll
be delighted by our charming capital and will
have a great wish to come here again.
