SIMULATED SITUATIONS

Module 0 - Personal Profile dialogue

You are at a party. Here you meet a foreigner. Talk to him/her.

  • get acquainted

  • ask for some personal information (country, hometown, occupation, age, etc)

  • ask about the purpose of coming to Rostov and the length of stay

  • talk about his/her first impressions of Russia and Rostov

  • ask about his/her interests and spare time activities

  • suggest another meeting

  • arrange the time and place

Dialogue

You are on a Student Exchange Programme in Britain. It is the Fresher’s Week party. Talk to one of the students there.

  • Get acquainted

  • Ask for some personal information (name, country of origin, etc)

  • Ask what university he/she studies at

  • Find out about his/her course of study

  • Share your impressions of the university and campus

  • Ask about his/her interests and favourite spare time activities

  • Suggest another meeting

You have just become a university student of SFU. At the matriculation ceremony you meet an international student who is studying at this university. Talk to him/her.

  • Say where and how long you have been studying it

  • Explain your reasons to study it

  • Ask about his/her experience in learning a foreign language

  • Ask for advice on how you can improve your knowledge of the English language

Dialogue

Recently you have got acquainted with a British student who studies Russian in Rostov. You meet him/her at the university library. Talk to him/her.

  • Greet him/her

  • Ask about his/her progress in learning the Russian language

  • Ask where and how long he/she has been studying it

  • Ask about his/her reasons for studying the Russian language

  • Speak about your experience in learning English

D I A L O G U E

You are in the university cafeteria. You talk to a British student who is studying Russian at South Federal University.

  • Greet the student and ask him/her how long he/she has been learning Russian

  • Ask if he/she finds learning Russian difficult

  • Express your opinion of learning English

  • Say what ways of learning a foreign language you find effective

  • Ask him/her what recommendations in language learning he/she finds helpful

  • Suggest keeping in touch with him/her via e-mail to make your language learning more effective
