Our University

Brest State University, one of the oldest and most famous among state and non-state establishments of higher learning.

It dates back from 1945 when on the 15th of March the regional government decided to open the Teacher's Training Institute in Brest.

In 1995 Brest State Teachers' Training Institute became a University. Now it occupies three academic buildings. One of them, a seven-storeyed building , The second is the faculty of physical education and building in Soviet Street.

Brest State University has three main departments: extra-mural (or correspondence), preparatory and day-time. The University has 11 faculties: Language and Literature, Foreign Languages, Physics, Mathematics, Primary School Teachers' Training, Physical Education, Biology, Law, Geography, Preschool Education, and History. The University educates students in more than 30 specialities. It tries to meet the demands of society and in 1996 it began training specialists in economical cybernetics and law.

The course of studies at the University lasts five years. The academic year is divided into two terms: the winter and summer terms.

The University has its own postgraduate course, opened in 1991.

At Brest State University a great number of students are engaged in various forms of research work under the supervision of qualified specialists.

Scientific work develops a spirit of independence in the students, helps them to understand the requirements of national economy, to design different devices, to write term-papers and diploma theses, and most important, to see the results of their labour being put into practice.

The Repablic of Belarus nearly 5 million people are engaged in the national economy. The Belarussian national economi is oriented towards the CIS countries' markets.

The problem of energy pro­vision is one of the most urgent. Nowadays the Belarussian industry feels great need for economical spending of power resources.

1990 in the Belarussian economy there started to develop free_:market relations Denationalization and privatization of state industrial enterprises .

The sources of the Belarussian culture come from the pre-Christian times and have a lot in common with traditions of other Indo-European cultures. One of the most important events in the Belarussian culture is Kupalle.

There are most professional theatres of drama music and ballet.

Belarussians preserved the Belarussian mentality, toler­ance, goodheartedness, and hard work.

The capital of Belarus is Minsk. Minsk was founded 1067.
