Faculty of applied mathematics and computer science

The Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science is one of the leading NSTU faculties. The number of students is 600, the annual enrollment being more than 100 students.

A few words about the history of education in the field are appropriate. In the early sixties, the major educational events were the opening of a degree in economic cybernetics in universities and in engineering math in polytechnical institutes. But the key issue in computer-related education took place in 1969 when a program in applied mathematics was established. By 1972 a course in applied math had been established at 40 universities and institutes. Basic courses in computer science included programming and languages, computer architecture, information processing methods, numerical methods, optimization, and operations research.

The faculty was set up in 1993 though the University has vast experience of training specialists in the field within the framework of its other faculties.

At present the faculty comprises seven departments. The major departments are the following: Department of Applied Mathematics; Department of Software Systems and Databases; Department of Parallel Computational Technologies; Department of Computational Technologies. The Faculty offers Bachelor’s degree in “applied mathematics and computer science”, Engineer’s degree in applied mathematics, and Master’s degrees in applied mathematics and computer science, mathematical modeling and computer software.

Students of the faculty not only receive fundamental training in the area of program and algorithmic facilities but also get a clear idea about the up-to-date level of hardware development. At present the faculty is planning to introduce new fields of specialization. Among these are mathematical modeling in engineering systems; application of mathematical methods to finance and insurance, and some others.

The faculty has four computer classrooms equipped with personal computers, which are connected to the University network.

In accordance with the curriculum, students are given fundamental training in the field of up-to-date computational and information technologies, they acquire techniques of development and implementation of up-to-date software, and skills in working and programming in different operational environments, study algorithmic and databases languages.

The range of subjects taught gives an opportunity to major in a wide variety of directions, which are computer graphics; network information technologies; artificial intelligence systems; up-to-date technologies of computer data analysis and optimal experimental design; computational methods for solving problems of mathematical physics; application of mathematical methods to finance and insurance.

The departments of the faculty are involved in carrying out research within the projects financed by the Russian Fundamental Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Federal programme “Integration”, and NSTU plan of research work.

Department of Computational Technologies

The Department was set up in May 1996 in accordance with the program of integration of research institutes of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences with leading Novosibirsk higher educational institutions.

The Department trains professionally qualified engineers in the field of applied mathematics and offers Master’s program in mathematical modeling.

Students of the department major in computational mathematics, mathematical, modeling, and applied mathematics.

Department of Parallel Computational Technologies

The Department was formed in 1996 on the basis of the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics (Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science). There are only three departments in Russia including the NSTU Department of Parallel Computational Technologies which train specialists in the area of supercomputing.

The main idea of forming this department is to join the facilities of the SB RAS and NSTU with the purpose of raising the level of education in modern fields of research and practical work.

The staff give courses in the area of parallel computations, but the main area of activity is Master’s and Cand.Sc. (doctoral) programs in the theory of parallel computations, parallel languages and programming systems, and parallel computations technologies.

The academic staff are involved in a number of national and international projects in which graduate students participate as well, provide international grants for graduate students’ internships, organize International Conference on Parallel Computational Technologies (PaCT) on a regular basis.

Department of Applied Mathematics

The Department was set up in 1972 to train engineers in the field of applied mathematics for the Western Siberian region.

At present the department offers Bachelor’s degree in the field of applied mathematics and computer science, Master’s degrees in mathematical modeling, and qualified engineer’s degree in the field of applied mathematics (degree of engineer-mathematician).

Within the Bachelor program, the Department gives courses in general subjects: mathematical analysis (calculus), functional analysis, geometry and algebra, information science, discrete mathematics, methods, methods of programming, data structure, and algorithms. In the third and fourth years students are given courses in differential equations; equations of mathematical physics; numerical methods; probability theory; mathematical statistics; stochastic processes; programming languages and methods of translation; basics of computer graphics; methods of optimization; theory of games; and operations research. Among the major subjects taught in the fourth year are statistical methods of data analysis; mathematical methods of experimental design; finite element method; modeling and control in economy; control theory.

Department of Software Systems and Databases

The Department of Software Systems and Databases was set up in March 1993. The staff of the Department are specialists in the field of developing system and applied software, computer systems and networks, distributed databases, artificial intelligence, data processing methods, programming languages and up-to-date technologies for software systems development.

The chief aim to form the Department was to concentrate within the framework of one research team the work directed to train specialists in the following fields: general-purpose computer systems; up-to-date technologies for developing complex software systems; data and knowledge processing and storage; artificial intelligence systems; modern programming languages and systems.

The Department offers Bachelor’s degree in the field of applied mathematics and computer science, Master’s degree in programming and computer software, and Engineer’s degree in applied mathematics. Besides, the department offers training leading to Cand.Sc. (Doctoral) degree in the application of mathematical methods and modeling to scientific research.
