Main bryansk facts

More than a thousand years ago our ancestors (4-2) founded a city on one of the steep banks of the Beautiful Desna River and named it "Bryansk" - meaning "the city in a dense forest". Now Bryansk is the center of a large and highly developed region on the boundaries of three great Slavonic states - Russia, the Ukraine and Byelorussia.

The Bryansk land is famous for its battle feats - from the glorious feat of a monk Peresvet, who challenged Chelubey on Kulikovo battlefield to the mass heroism of Bryansk partisans during World War II.

The Bryansk land is a great manufacturing region of Russia and the heart of transport communications. Main railroads and highways, network of oil and gas pipelines cross the countryside.

The Bryansk land is famous for its cultural treasures. This land was the source of inspiration for an ancient singer Boyan, poet Fyodor Tutchev and writers Alexey Tolstoy and Daniil Andreev. Art glass and crystal wares of Dyatkovo Art Glassware factory are known around the world.

Bryansk Region is located in the central part of the East-European plain, on the watershed of Dnepr and Volga River systems (1).

The region borders on two Republics (Independent States) and on four other regions of Russia: Gomel and Mogilev regions of the republic of Belarus (West), Chernigov and Sumy regions of the Ukraine (South), Kaluga and Smolensk regions of Russia (North) and Orel and Kursk regions of Russia (East and South-East) (2).

Bryansk region contains 34,900 (thirty four thousand nine hundred) square km and has a population of nearly 1,5 (one and a half) million people (3).

The region consists of 27 districts and has 16 cities. The center of the region is Bryansk city (4-1). Other large cities in the region are Klintzy, Novozybkov, Dyatkovo,

The climate in Bryansk Region is temperate continental (5). Winter is relatively tender and snowy, summer is warm. The average temperature in January is 7 to 9 degrees centigrade below zero, in July from 18 (to eighteen) to 19 (to nineteen) degrees centigrade.

There are 125 (hundred twenty five) rivers in Bryansk region, Desna being the longest of them (6). There are 49 (forty nine) large lakes in the region, the largest is lake Kozhany.

Bryansk Region is rich in such mineral recourses as: peat, sand, clay and chalk (7).

Bryansk Region is located in the zone of forests. The total forest area is nearly one million hectares (8). The largest forests are located along the left bank of the Desna river. The pine forests (42% (forty two) of the total forest area in the region) are most important for the timber industry. 23% (twenty three) are birch and 15% (fifteen) are aspen forests. Oak, alder, ash, maple, lime are also widespread trees in Bryansk Region. The total resources of wood are nearly 100 million cubic meters.

The official symbols of Bryansk region are Flag, Coat of Arms and Anthem (9). Coat of Arms symbolizes the unity of three great Slavonic nations. It reflects traditional spiritual values of people in the Bryansk region, in particular: the battle glory, industrial mastery and farming. The Flag of Bryansk region is a red banner. There is the Coat of Arms of Bryansk Region painted on the Flag. The Anthem is the song "Bryansk forest" by S. Katz and A. Sofronov. This song was the hymn of Bryansk Partisan Movement during the Great Patriotic War.
