Text 2 linneaus university; fojo

Get acquainted with one of the Swedish universities, which provides education in journalism and has very good contacts with the Department of English and Speech Communication and the Institute of Journalism, BSU.

L innaeus University (LNU) is a public university in the Småland region of Sweden. It has two campuses, one in Växjö and one in Kalmar. Linnaeus University was established in 2010 by a merger of former Växjö University (which was founded in 1967 and granted a University status in 1999) and Kalmar University College (founded in 1977), and has been named in honour of Carl Linnaeus. It comprises several schools (including the Institute for Further Training of Journalists (FOJO)) and faculties.

The School of Social Sciences provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills and expertise while at the same time extending their knowledge. They offer a broad education which opens doors to many different jobs (for example project management, analysis, planning, human resources and staff management, administration, media production or alternatively as an information officer or journalism).

The degree courses and programs have an international profile and there are extensive opportunities for foreign studies abroad. The courses include practical elements in all our courses and programs as well as the participation of guest lecturers, a mentor scheme, practical assignments in teaching as well as opportunities to gain work experience or go on study visits to organizations, public authorities or companies.

In addition the School of Social Sciences offers PhD research training in sociology and political science. All programs at first cycle level (Bachelor’s degree) offer students the opportunity to progress to second cycle level on master’s degree (one or two year).

FOJO INTERNATIONAL

A free society needs free media. We develop journalism around the world exchanging experiences, increasing professionalism and pomoting freedom of expression.

Our focus is media development

Fojo is run by journalists with a passion for good journalism. Media development is our mandate, in Sweden and in the context of international development cooperation. We know that media has a bearing on poverty reduction and democracy in its broader sense and that free and independent journalism makes a difference.

Media changes and so does Fojo

New media and the media convergence rapidly change the media landscape and challenges journalism as we have known it for decades. Fojo changes along with the media landscape, holding on to our mandate: professional journalism.

This is Fojo

T he Fojo Media Institute supports independent media and freedom of expression in Sweden and internationally. Fojo is the leading media development institute in Sweden and is a dialogue partner to the Swedish government on media development issues. Over the years, Fojo has trained 50 000 journalists from more than 90 countries.  Fojo is a non-profit academic institution within the Linnaeus University. We are independent and our agenda is fully open: Professional journalism, freedom of expression, democracy and human rights.

We prefer to work with a local or regional partner that has a long-term perspective and a clear ownership of the media development in the region/country as well as a broad approach on how to make real and lasting change.

Examples of current long-term partners for Fojo are the Birzeit University Media Institute in Palestine, the Media Resource and Training Centre in Jaffna (Sri Lanka), the Belarus Association of Journalists (BAJ) and the Vietnam Ministry of Culture and Information Press Dept and the Union of Journalists in Moscow.
