Minsk State Linguistic University was founded in 1948. Today, it's a leading centre of linguistic education in the country. It draws on long experience of training teachers and interpreters. It is well known for its teacher education programmes, and for its work in curriculum and material design, in testing and evaluation, and in second and third language acquisition.
MSLU comprises seven faculties. They are English, German, French, Spanish Faculties, the Interpreters' Faculty, the Faculty of Intercultural Communication, the Russian Faculty for Foreign Citizens. The students have opportunities to study Italian, Swedish, Dutch, Polish, Check, Turkish, Arabian, Chinese and Japanese languages.
The teaching staff of the University consists of professors, lecturers and tutors. They give lectures, take seminars and have tutorials with the students in various subjects: Phonetics, Grammar, and Speech Practice, Beiarusian, Russian, Latin, Linguistics, Psychology, History, Area Studies, etc.
The staff of MSLU, past and present, have produced many well known books for teacher education and for use by language learners.
As the proverb has it, "No pains, no gains". The students take great pains with their classes to gain as much knowledge as possible. They have at their disposal a great number of halls, classrooms, language media centres and labs equipped with all sorts of audio-visual aids, which help them to practise the pronunciation, get a better command of the language and get rid of mistakes in the shortest possible time. In the library there are thousands of books on different subjects and in different languages. As soon as a school-leaver is admitted to the University, he is allowed to borrow from the University library any book he needs. A lot of students take part in the work of scholarly societies and clubs.
For those who play sports there are different sports clubs. For those who are fond of poetry, art, music and dancing there is a great number of amateur groups where the students have every opportunity to develop their talents.
Studying with MSLU
During your time of study with MSLU, you are expected to:
> keep up with what's going on, you will need to keep in touch with matters related to your programme;
> study diligently, attend timetabled classes as required, do your assignments and hand them in on time;
> take responsibility for your own learning with the support of staff who will help you plan your study timetable; reading outside of lectures, seminars and workshops is essential;
> inform the teaching staff if you are ill and cannot attend a lecture or seminar; if you are going to be ill for some time, you will need to provide the necessary medical certificates; these days it is common for full-time students to take on part-time work, this is all right as long as you remember that your education is your priority, so make sure any part-time work doesn't interfere with your study time;
> inform your tutor of any difficulty which you may be experiencing which might affect your studies;
> not disturb people who are trying to study; more specifically, not to talk in areas set aside for silent study;
> treat University property and materials with care and respect;
> treat all University staff, students and visitors with the courtesy and respect that you are entitled to expect from them;
> behave in a way which respects your neighbouring community and not to bring the University into disrepute.
