Oral Speech Practice Exercises

Ex. 6. Practise reading the following flashes of conversation:

I

Tom -Hello, Bridget. You are a second-year student already.

Bridget -Hello, Tom. You are quite right. The 1st year is over.

Excuse me, Tom. I’m in a hurry. I have to ventilate

our laboratory before the practical class in chemistry

begins.

Tom - Could you take me with and show me the chemical

laboratory? I’m only the first-year student, but I’d

like to see how the chemical laboratory is equipped.

Bridget - Here is our laboratory. Come in, please. I like to

work here very much because I prefer to attend

practical classes.

Tom - What a strange odour you have here.

Bridget - No wonder, chemists often work with substances having

strong and unpleasant odour.

Tom - Bridget, which experiments can be carried out here?

Bridget - Here you can make hydrogen. Firstly put some zinc into

a flask. Then add some sulphuric acid.

Tom - What will happen?

Bridget - After that bubbles will form on the zinc. It’s

hydrogen. Now I’ll record the findings.

Tom - Are you going to be a chemist?

Bridget - Oh, yes, It’s true. It’s very interesting to be a chemist.

Tom - Thank you. I had really a good time.

Bridget - Good luck to you. Good bye.

Tom - Bye.

Replace Russian sentences with the help of English ones:

  • Привет, Саша. Ты уже на третьем курсе?

  • Привет, Аня. I’m only a second-year student. I’m so sorry. I’m going to the chemical laboratory.

  • Could you take me with?

  • What are you going to do it for?

Here is our laboratory. Come in, please.

  • What are all these shelves for?

  • Are you going to carry out experiments today?

  • Sure. Would you like to stay with my group?

  • I’d like to, but

  • I think I should go. Thanks a lot.

  • You’re welcome. Bye.
